so maybe SE is the case of having good technology but with unrealised potential (similar to Betamax and MSDuo). SE cannot have an edge if u cannot make the technology to work and translated into sales.
i have to say i do agree with this se always seem to come up with a great product but it just ignores what users already have and like.
i still think se has a lot to offer the market but i do think it needs to look at were its going and quickly. i think the betamax anology is perfect for them as this was by far a better product than vhs but due to cost and availablity it failed it was the techy chose much like se are for the geeks like us but if you wanna survive youve got to have a mass market appeal or at least have people asspire to own your products like porchse etc

I think that we are all, perhaps, focusing too much on sales figures, which, whilst important, are not a definitive guide to a company's future performance. SE are a relatively new company and I think that we shall see their sales figures improving over the coming years as they are able to branch out into new products, especially the low-end market. The biggest goal for SE should be brand recognition, customers tend to go with what they know and SE simply aren't known by enough people in enough parts of the world yet.
One very interesting market SE could try using to improve its marketshare is the North American market, which is just screaming out for good quality mobiles. Perhaps a few deals with some of the networks there might help SE to establish a major presence there.

@scotsboy people do look at sales perhaps to much but they are an indication of performance going forward as is profit and cost control. its a buyers market so sales are important and no matter how much profit you can make on a handset you have to sell it to make that profit or its worthless.
se is new but as with all new companies you have to make a mark and you are correct they could do with improving there image as they do appeal to the more tech savvy end of the market. nothing wrong with this but it is a constant changing market one second your king next second the laughing stock

@slattery69
I agree and as I have said before 3G will hopefully offer SE a chance to really move forwards.

even though se is a new company, i think it has already got quite a good brand recognition because of the "s" part of the name (at least in my part of the world).
unfortunately, i think se is following the wrong footsteps of "s" by marketing its products using an image of exclusivity, elegance, high tech and premium (i.e. high) price product.
10-15 years ago, this type of marketing may be more palatable. at that time, it is much more difficult to produce high-quality and reliable electronic gadgets because of many components that made up the device. And "s" excelled in doing this.
but today, everybody knows most electronics are solid state and many r produced by third-party fabs. In the eyes of consumers, it is quite difficult to discern based on quality anymore.
So then issue of pricing comes into play. SE pricing are generally on the high side (when product was launched). In today's competitive world where money is more difficult to come by, it doesnt go down well with many consumers when u ask them to pay extra for a "puff of smoke" called image/exclusivity.

Evenn though I think that SE lacks a phone in the €150 piecve of the market, I am convinced that SE phones can be somewhat more expensive. SE clients are ready to pay a bit for the 'puff of smoke'.
People are ready tp apy for something they want. That must be the main reason the t610 did so well over here - not the features. I do not believe that all those women realy did use bluetooth for file transfer or whatever fancy stuff you ca do. They just wanted that phone.
But you are right, the price differenceyou can put on that must be a few % whereas just ten years ago that could easily go up to 25 pr even 50%.

your right when you say se customers are prepared to pay a bit more but thats se problem people who arent there exisiting customer look at the prices and then buy a nokia or a samsung as they dont need all the features.
on the t610 it sold so well because they launched it on pay as you go staright away and it was very very cheap compared to all the other camera phones at the time. it was £170 when launch the closest samsungs and nokias were over £200

This debate is focusing more on marketing now, which is something not usually discussed, rather people tend to concentrate on SE's technological ability.

scotsboyuk,
I agree with you and that's the only edge Nokia has and can be proud of at the moment.

@McKinley
It's funny how the different manufacturers are known for different qualities.
