think of it as running a test mule, much like car manufacturers will use the body of another car (even sometimes from a different company) to test the performance of their own chassis/engines/etc parts of there vehicles. its done in other industries, it may not be the first its been done here either.
its not so far fetched where i wouldnt believe it. but lets wait on a more official statement.

I see many contradiction here...
Look at
Smape's Prev Here.
Smape CLAIMS that they has latest C905 with final cam module from Sony, but they don't even mention Exmor.
Look at this
C905 SAMPLES from Smape.
100% Crop of Smape's C905 (R1AA081):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then, visit
mobil.idnes.cz
THIS site has a NEWER C905 proto than Smape (The EXIF told us), and this site CLAIMS that their protos using Sony CMOS Exmor Sensor.
Few highlights from mobil.idnes.cz:
"When compared to any dslr, like the a200, the C905 falls flat to the ground- afterall, the chip doesn't MAKE the pictures, the optics do"
"the results still haven't reached the quality we expected- the pictures are pale and a bit foggy. As of now the C905 also has troubles in bright light-the pic gets overburned-usually more towards it's center. And yes - purple fringing is here to stay."
"BUT take a look at the comparison pics taken by coleague c902- the c905 has a vast amount of more details- this must be caused by the chip, beecause the megapixel jump wasn't that prominent. Digital noise is still at large with the c905, but much less than with the c902, so the c905 keeps more details."
"SE has about 2 months to queak this model- fixing color reproduction and hopefully the fogginess aswell, but we can already state that the c905 has a great chance of becoming the best cameraphone to date."
Look at this
C905 SAMPLES from mobil.idnes.cz.
100% Crop of newer C905 from mobil.idnes.cz (R1AA083):
Worse image in newer firmware? Purple fringing exists? Hmm... Smape's older proto is better...
All I can say, both of the sites still has OLD C905, but it's still newer than early proto.
Why? C905 newer protos has newer firmware revision (R1BA0xx),
and also including geotagging in their EXIF... Both of the sites brought old EXIF.
This non-sense claim makes me confused...
And yeah, why SE doesn't learn from K850's mistake by adding two-layer lens? Although the 2nd layer is a mineral glass for protective purposes, it still would make Lens problem (if you has the protos, you know what I'm talking about.)
K800 has one-layer for focusing, that would give huge advantages. Just look at purple-fringing that C905 has.
And for comparison, see Innov8 samples
HERE.
100% Crop:
Who is the winner? Too many rumours around. Please someone makes clear about the cam modules C905 used.

the c905 or innov8 are not rumours.
please post any discussions on either phone in their respective threads or create a thread comparing their photo quality.
this is not the place. people come here to read rumours. not info on already released phones

I'm sorry. My bad. I just wrote my response from these post in this topic, several page ago:

"The potential bestseller is to appear in October (while the closest competitor, - Samsung i8510, - will become available a month earlier yet..."
"SE are going to implement a different and better camera..."
I don't understand how they can have the final version of the C905 before the i8510 even though the i8510 will be released before the C905

as Eldar mentioned in his (arm race) topic, it is a Samsung CMOS sensor.
the difference is in the algorithm.

judging from these pics found on this website, the camera prowess looks promising

No, Eldar had an earlier prototype with the Samsung sensor, and he should not have been judging the phone on it. Just one of the mistakes he has made lately. The later prototypes have the Sony sensor.
I really really doubt that something so integral as the sensor in a camera phone would totally change from a prototype to a final product.
Well Smape, among others, has confirmed it. The reason it may have changed may simply be that Sony's sensor wasn't ready for a while or something like that.
By the way, the cam module used is still rumours, isn't it?
EDIT: Now I has been posted in respective topic. I'm sorry.
