Noooo! I've noticed cracks starting to appear in my black 3g iPhone

Looking on various sites it seems quite a few people have had the same issue and some have had their phones replaced.

I'm gonna contact apple and see what they say.

How old's your phone, and where are the cracks?

*frantically removes case and checks for cracks*

Have you just been using your phone naked ie no case?

Look on the bright side i guess - you'll get a spanking new phone out of it!

They seem to be mostly pretty good about this sort of stuff - just swapping it over at the Genius bar.

I use mine "naked" save for a knitted wooly sock that it slips in and out of - but I don't think that's relevant really, a case may protect against scratches but cracks are something quite different. They shouldn't happen in normal use at all, with or without a case, but if they are going to happen (because the plastic is faulty and prone to stress fracture) then it's quite probable the case won't help anyway.

From what I've read, many people are reporting cracks near the silent switch and/or headphone sockets, which are nothing to do with being unprotected by a case and everything to do with the repeated stress of inserting headphones, flipping switches etc. A case isn't going to have any affect on that.

Besides, if the thing needs a case to stop it falling apart, then Apple should be supplying one!

Very true @Boinng. Case or no case, the cracks will still happen, as you say, due to stress fractures. Total design flaw is it not? Hmm. I've heard about this happening before when they first came out. Not good.

@Snapples Wouldnt worry about it too much, i reckon they'll be sweet about it.

Not to tempt fate or anything, but I wouldn't mind it happening to mine so i could get it switched over for a pristine one

I remember there being a spate of it when they first came out in July but I hoped at the time it was a quality issue with the plastics they were using and that they'd have it sorted by the time I bought mine (October).

Still clinging on to that hope a little since mine's not showing any ill effects yet - but I've just read a few reports from people with 5 month old phones showing cracks, so who knows. Snapples didn't say how old his/hers is, maybe it's brand new from another dodgy batch, maybe it's from July and they've just been lucky till now, or maybe they got theirs in October too!

Tis a worry, but like you say, if it means a whole new phone then might not actually be so bad.

I think the cracked ones were from one of the early batches. Same as in the US where there were ones with the dodgey screens on the iphone 1st gen ones..

Hey all anyone here use TwittererFone?

Im guessing all twitter apps work more or less the same way but I was wondering what happens to all the mesages posted they never seem to get deleted. Rather they get collapsed ect....Is that the way it is supposed to work?

Thanks
