what device were they testing here? prototype? review device? retail device?

*the antutu benchmark score is incredibly low
*the display is very poor with a 500:1 contrast ratio, even lower than the xperia z's
*the photos taken were all grainy and washed out (their sample photos here)

I thaught the same... especially for the benchmarks... they are bery low... I've seen 34000 points in AnTuTu and a lot more points in others benchmark... very strange

@dalmac and moogoo
exactly for this reason Sponse said that bezel and dimensions were highly subjective

recombu's Sony Xperia Z1 review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rj5bInhLm0
basically they say the phone is EXCELLENT, MINUS *drum roll*:
1. the screen is disappointing because it's washed out, viewing angles are not good, and it's not enjoying reading text in it.
2. the screen scratches easily because of sony's screen protector. they said that in future video they will show how to remove the screen protector (?). what screen protector are they talking about? why is it there if scartched easily? is it hard to remove?
3. the loudspeaker is disappointing. it's just not loud.
SONY, DO YOU READ THIS? LEARN WHAT TO IMPROVE IN THE Z2!
overall seems like a fantastic phone, i'm sure people will not be disappointed, i guess no phone is perfect.

2. Probably the same screen protector Sony uses since x10 I believe. It's protecting the display from shattering, but it's totally not scratch resistant. You can take it off, but then the screen gets easily smudged, which is hard to clean up...

And you lose the Sony Logo if you remove the anti shatter proof screen protector.

@supercoolman - still way overpriced

@amirprog - there is a shatterproof film over the glass. they have had this since the X10. unfortunately it can scratch against keys and does scratch over time with use. It can be removed and you can place your own screen protector on the glass. People just tend to leave it on because sony does such a great job putting it on heh.

Also, that review seems strange. reading text on it isn't enjoyable? it's got 440ppi! how can reading text not be enjoyable..

Goddamn it Sony. Why are you still using crappy displays on your flagship smartphone, when every other device (Laptops, Tablets, phablets etc.) use fantastic IPS displays?

I just don't understand it.

Only saving grace is that some displays appear better than others. GSM Arena's handset seems to have a phenominal display with a 1500+:1 contrast ratio. Why don't ALL of them have that same screen...?

about the screen protector, REALLY? then what's the point of protecting the screen if it's not scratch resistance which is not less important. sony must find better solution.
on a positive note, recombu's Sony Xperia Z1 video sample (Full HD): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWPW48rh398
the video samples looks really good and sharp to my unprofessional eyes, a bit hard to believe it's a phone camera, isn't it?

Exactly. And when Basil reviewed the Z a while back, he said reading books on the display of the Z was fantastic to read on or words to tthat effect. How can the display on the Z1 be any worse?

Better, brighter displays?
Displays with higher contrast than the handset that he got to review?

EDIT:
Competition has gotten better since the Z came out. Aside from the very rare HTC J Butterfly/Droid DNA, the Z was the first 1080p smartphone. Though the display quality wasn't the best, it was still sharper than most competition at the time. Now all flagships are 1080p and boast better displays.
