Sorry, but I can't agree with any of those statements. We don't manufacture consumer electronics in NZ so our issues have little relevance to manufacturers. You'd be shocked to know the cost price of electronic goods; aftermarket brand BT headsets cost wholesalers $1.00...

If you want to discuss the American motor industry crisis, that's a different matter.

The manufacturing sector as a whole is what is being hit by the financial crisis. The fact that the source of our consumer products is overseas suppliers only proves me right I'm sorry, as those markets are most influenced by the state of the major world economies!

I work in the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering sector and I can guarantee that the prices of those products alone are set to increase 5% per month in the new year to an overall increase of approximately 25%, while the ripples of economic recession will be making waves in other sectors for much longer.

The fact that most consumer electronics are made in Asian countries also suggests that when everyone has turned to them to manufacture because of the perceived economic advantages, they will dictate the price at which they are sold back to the western world, and the associated cost of materials (Just look at oil prices until recently as a best example), especially when the value of their currencies are directly linked to the value of the Greenback and the Euro.

People are actually cottoning on to the fact that continually producing new products in an "upgrade and dispose of the old" cycle is detrimental to economies and the environment; you will find that this is already bringing about a paradigm shift.

Hopefully the idiot accountants who have been running the world for so long on imaginary money realise soon that they have made a hash of it.

Gosh what a rant, apologies all...

This article somewhat supports frankthetank here, even though it really only states that Europe will see price hikes. I would tend to assume we'd see the effects of rising European prices here though.

I heard them advertising telecoms new "faster" network on the radio. I wonder if anyone actually realises that it will just be the same as vodafones.

unfortuneatly Telecom have gone out of their way to make the new network as different and non-compatible with Vodafone as possible.

I've just come to the end of my jury service obligations for this year. Deciding on allegations of assault on a child certainly puts life into perspective. I'm taking today off to come to terms with the experience. I'll do it again and will certainly recommend every NZer do their part.

I guess you can't talk about it really, but being a parent certainly changes the point of view! And giving a child a clip round the ear for trying to run out on the road is deemed as assault these days so that kind of throws a lot of opinion into the mix...

In other news...

I got a new new toy today so the K850i may be taking it easy for a while...

Would you believe only $1017 for a twin lens kit and a 4GB SDHC card, and a free bag via redemption from Canon. I couldn't talk myself out of it lol!

Actually, because the alledged incidents took place before the legislation changed, section 59 was a defence for reasonable application of force for the purpose of correction.

The harrowing part was finding out the background of the accused on Google after the case was over. All I'll say is that I feel justified with my final decisions but the jurors who criticized me may not sleep well.

Funny that you mention jury duty. I had to do it in January of this year, but I was never picked to be on the jury. I almost was picked on a minor assault case, but then they didn't draw my name once we were in the courtroom and so I went home. It was still a good experience to see how it all works. Dodgy looking people everywhere in the court buildings though!

Then I got a letter asking me to do it again only about a month back, but because I had already done it within the last two years, I was able to get out of it. I would have done it if the pay rate wasn't so low but I earn more on my crappy minimum wage job at Timezone, and so I pulled out. I really need to save for next year, so money is more important to me right now.

What I don't really get is why they sent another jury summons to me when I had done it so recently. I mean, I know heaps of people that have never been summoned at all.

@frankthetank: Nice camera! Must have set you back a bit! My parents bought a 40D (I think) a few months back that I've had a bit of a play on. Really great cameras, them Canons.
