NEWS:

I heard today that Sony are clamping down on the importing of PSPs into Europe and the UK. Shops selling them are being told they must stop doing so.

I checked with one supplier in Preston and he confirmed it. He said they were allowed to sell the stock they had but couldn't get anymore and Sony were targeting the supply origins.

Also.......

I was told that this has led to Sony now implementing region coding on the Euro spec PSP (as predicted in this thread a looooong tome ago)!

More worrying though, I was told the games would also be regional! i.e. the UK games will not work on Jap or US PSPs but I'm not sure if this is possible.

I can see that the UK PSP would only play UK games but the US and Jap consoles are region free and so surely would still play them?

nooooooooooo!!!

please someone confirm that THIS IS WRONG!!!

More bad news:

PSP, UMD and XMB Trademarks Are Not Actually Owned By Sony Computer Entertainment

Sony has not secured the European trademarks to the names PSP, UMD or XMB (a component of the operating system that appears on all PSP packaging).

Trademarks for the name:
PSP (a trademark currently registered by Owtanet Limited in 2000)
UMD (Universal Media Disks - Sony's proprietary optical storage solution - which is owned by Olympus Corporation and being opposed by AMD)
And XMB (a PSP operating system component which is used with all PSP packaging which has not yet been registered as a trademark).

Sony's failure to secure these trademarks could potentially lead to further delays to the European launch of the PSP, or could result in the costly re-branding of a product which has already proved to be a hit in the US and Japan.

so its best to import one unless you wanna wait until... hmm lets say.. December!?
