There is a partial solution to that. You can get to know that before updating but you have to start the update procedure nonetheless.

As soon as the update service software starts downloading the files, look into 'Program Files\\Sony Ericsson\\Update Service\\software-data' folder. You can see which version it is downloading from the name of the files. If its still the same, you can cancel downloadind and don't have to go through actual updation of the phone.

has anyone tried recovery mode in SE website? Does it help to revert back to the previous firmware? will it be 100% working without problem after taking this step? i'm really tired with the bad quality video ever since the previous update...

recovery mode does not revert to previous firmwares, its object is to try and recover phones that died during update by reflashing. But it reflashes with the current firmware.

i hope i am wrong but i dont forsee the vidcam being improved at all.

SE has known about the degradation and yet proceeded to release the w800 with the same degraded vidcam. my thoughts are that the higher bitrate interferes with the phone's stability. SE might not be willing to take that trade off

ur probably right! What other reason would there be to reduce the bitrate in the first place? I encode videos on my pc at 100kbps and watch them on my phone (not to sure what the current phone recording bitrate is anymore). They do play fine most of the time though, but every now and then after I step back out of the media player after watching a film or something the phone will reset itself! Not a big problem but does tie up with your instability theory! I have no other probs with my fone at all as far as i know.

oh an i was wondering... whats the weather like in uranus?

I have the same problem, my phone has frozen twice and restarted once. On all three occasions, I was watching videos using the media player and then I wanted to exit and go to the main desktop, so I pressed the back button a few times in quick succession.... then the phones restarted/froze ...

As I said before, I think the problem is related to memory timing and this is demonstrated by moving through menus rapidly, large pictures etc. I am not surprised it has taken a long time to get the next firmware nor surprised if this is not totally resolved when the firmware does make its entrance. I think it is a big issue - memory throughput and a mass re-write / optimisation of the code is going on. This data rate issue I think may be the cause of the O2 Vs R1J GPRS.

oh man... now i really regret what i've done! i should not have update the firmware!!!!! previously i was having R1A044 and because of my itchy hand, i updated it... and now there's no chance to revert back... a great great lesson for me... 'not to do any update to the phone when you find it's working fine..'
