I've pretty much decided to get a 16GB iPod touch and keep my Sony Ericsson W610 as my phone, and skip at least v1.0 of the iPhone.
I can get the 16GB iPhone touch for about £240 after various discounts.
I reckon the iPhone will be at least £300 + a minimum £25 a month contract for at least a year, possibly 18 months, making it £600-£750 all in.
I'm just about to cancel my O2 contract and go back to Pay & Go, due to O2 removing the ability to dial 0844 & 0845 number in my inclusive minutes.
I'm very happy with my W610 and can't see any other SE's I'm that interested in at the moment. There's no real advantages in having an iPhone for calls and texts, and everything else (except POP3 email) can be done on an iPod touch.
So, all in all, its gonna be much cheaper to get an iPod touch, keep the W610, and not be locked into any lengthy contract. Then see what iPhone v2 is like.
I saw the iPod classic and new iPod nano today. The iPod nano was impressive, especially for the price. The iPod classic less so. It's just a higher capacity regular iPod with the same UI as the new nano.

Yeah, I'm fairly confident that it won't be long before some hacker has managed to get Google Maps and Email working on the iPod touch.
I'm not so bothered about these two apps really though. All my email accounts can be accessed via webmail on the iPod touch or via POP3/Gmail app on my W610. Google maps is less useful without a mobile network connection, as if you're near enough to a Wi-fi hotspot with the touch, you could just use Google Maps on the web anyway...

I'll make it my mission to try and extract the apps and if someone will help me after they get the touch it'll be great.

Apple has removed one of the earlier advertised features of the iPod touch.
Compare the current Apple web-page for the iPod touch's Multitouch page:
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/features.html?feature=multitouch
....with the Google cached same page from a few days ago:
http://64.233.183.104/search?[....]atures.html?feature=multitouch
The text about the keyboard has changed from:
And iPod touch features a touchscreen QWERTY keyboard perfect for browsing the web in Safari, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store,
entering calendar events, or adding new contacts.

So, now you can enter new contacts on the iPod, but not new events!
What gives!

That is a shame... adding calendar info would be fantastic!
