Isn't the cost down to where it's manufactured?? Cheaper Samsung phones are sometimes made in China like the iPhone is. But Samsung flagships are normally built in Korea. Would that be down to higher costs or not?? Am only asking not saying am right. Samsung are also one of if not the largest chip manufacturer in the world which it must make millions from.

THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGE SAMSUNG HAS OVER APPLE AND OTHER SMARTPHONE VENDORS
Apple (AAPL), the world’s most profitable smartphone maker, has a number of advantages over most of the competition. Momentum, complete control over its end-to-end user experience, design prowess and a number of major new revenue channels it may be preparing to tap can be listed among them. But there is one area where top rival Samsung (005930) has a huge edge over Apple and other smartphone companies, and a recent report illustrates just how important it really is.
Earlier this week, research firm IHS iSuppli issued its compulsory pre-launch estimate for the Galaxy S 4′s bill of materials. According to that estimate, the Galaxy S 4 costs Samsung about $236 per unit excluding manufacturing costs. That figure is quite high compared to the estimated $207 Apple pays for each iPhone 5, but a key observation was made by Forbes’ Parmy Olson in a recent post: More than half of the cost of each Galaxy S 4 goes right back into Samsung’s pocket.
The international version of the Galaxy S 4 costs Samsung $236 per unit, but $149 worth of parts used in the phone are manufactured by Samsung, such as the eight-core Exynos processor and the full HD Super AMOLED display. That means 63% of Samsung’s cost per handset is funneled back into the company’s component businesses.
But beyond dollars and cents, this also gives Samsung a level of control over its devices that no other vendor can compete with. ”That type of specialization they can work with,” IHS analyst Wayne Lam said. “If they know these components are coming down the line they can start planning and innovating on the software. ‘We have this extra processing power, so why don’t we do this and that.’ “
BGR recently previewed the Galaxy S 4 and we called it the Android smartphone by which all others will be judged in 2013. The phone will begin rolling out globally next month.

Yes, I agree with many of the things this article says.
But from another point of view, Sony probably makes quite a lot of revenue from supplying the camera sensors found on all top selling mobile devices:
- Galaxy S3
- iPhone 4s
- iPhone 5
- Galaxy S4
- Probably others

Clearly not enough to make them profitable.

My GS3 says made in Korea, assembled in Vietnam, on the other hand, my GS2 says made in China. The cost depends on a mixture of things, but the main point is that Samsung make the more expensive components of the phone such as the NAND mem, Display, SoC etc... Themselves, that helps them shave off a huge amount of the cost, as it says in the article, most of the profit goes right back to them WRT components.
I'm simply stunned at how far this company has come, not even Nokia at their peak had this much power over not only the production of their own products but over the industry to, quite scary yet intriguing, and now Samsung have gone into the content game with the different media+education Hubs and Samsung Apps store, we are just seeing the beginning of it all.

Nokia didn't have that same level back then cos the smartphone never really took off back when Nokia was top

Perhaps just one of the reasons they managed to achieve this is being heavily subsidized by the Korean government for years (or decades). Some Koreans have told me than it is very difficult for any small or medium sized company to do any kind of business in Korea. This is because Samsung, LG, Hyundai and several other big famous Korean companies produce and sell all kinds of products and services one can imagine. And of course this makes Samsung, LG, etc. very, very powerful.
For example: Samsung has its own hotels, gas stations and supermarkets in Korea. Among other things they make are: food products, cars and ships.
The government of a western country would have never allowed such big monopolist companies to exist (we love competition).
But in Korea it is the other way around - the government has helped Samsung, LG, etc. to become so big.

The camera samples on GSMArena show that imo that camera is certainly no leap forward from the S3.
The images pretty much look the same (albeit in 13mpx), colours, detail and focus all seem the same as the S3, even the processing algorithm seems the same.
Saying that, their comparison to the XZ camera shows that the S4 is much better in terms of picking up detail.

I think the MP race should end now anyway.

GALAXY S 4 COULD HELP SAMSUNG ‘UNSEAT APPLE AS KING OF INNOVATION’
Expectations were high leading up to last week’s Galaxy S 4 unveiling and while no one was blown away by the handset’s design, a number of industry watchers believe Samsung (005930) delivered an impressive device that will carry the company’s momentum forward thanks to intriguing new software features. There are strong opinions on both sides of the argument regarding just how innovative Samsung’s next-generation flagship phone really is, but one recent report suggests the Galaxy S 4 could be the start of shift that sees Samsung “unseat Apple (AAPL) as king of innovation.”
“I think the S Band and the S health monitoring services on the S4 point the way to where smartphones have to go – true lifestyle computing. And why Samsung could unseat Apple as king of innovation,” Forbes contributor Haydn Shaughnessy wrote in a recent column. ”But first there are conditions Samsung will have to meet.”
Shaughnessy wrote that the Galaxy S 4′s gorgeous screen and features like smart scroll and gesture controls will be topics of conversation in the near term, but in the ongoing Samsung vs. Apple rivalry, he sees an Apple weakness that Samsung might be able to capitalize on.
“On [the iPhone's] features page Apple is showcasing the retina display, size and power; on the in-built apps page, Apple is showcasing maps, camera, video, Siri, passbook, and then web functions like email,” he wrote. “Now I don’t want to say these are not so interesting but they are dangerously close to what the competition is now doing as well if not better. What’s missing is a page called services, the things Apple and its devices will do for you, and the support it provides to your lifestyle. Top of most of our lists for lifestyle care is health.”
Samsung now has a head start in the quest to modernize health tracking. Now, in order to achieve real success and steal the innovation crown from Apple, Samsung will have to “summon up the nerve to invest in services the way it invests in components,” Shaughnessy noted.

Samsung Galaxy S4 to get 16 optimised EA games from launch
EA vice president of new platforms Glenn Roland confirmed that editions of the likes of Real Racing 3 and The Simpsons: Tapped Out will land in Google Play on day one, alongside tower defence title Plants vs Zombies and the more sedate likes of Bejeweled Blitz and Tetris Blitz.
Roland said: "We're delighted to be partnered with Samsung to bring some of our fans' favourite mobile gaming titles to the Samsung Galaxy S4 in time for launch.
"The device's higher resolution, larger screen and increased processing power will give our games an opportunity to look even more beautiful for Samsung consumers."
In a sign of Samsung’s intention to play up the S4’s credentials as a gaming device, the phone was launched alongside the Game Pad accessory.
This includes dual analogue sticks, as well as shoulder and action buttons, paving the way for more immersive games and freeing serious gamers from the fiddly touchscreen controls.

But this does not mean Galaxy S4 is more than twice better than Xperia Z or HTC One.
For many people all of the 3 models are almost equally close to being the perfect device in different ways. (All of them have their strengths and weaknesses).
You see, i agree with you in some ways, but totally disagree in others.
Is the S4 better than the competition ? i'd say through experience of my S3 and no hands on knowledge of the S4, yes i'd say it is or "will be".
But why ? its simple. Samsung are the only company that not only bring devices to the market which cater for all types of users, the best all round hardware internally, the best package and value for money, simply the better Android phones. They also support and respect their consumers with regular updates of Android and software perks which add functionality.
Rival products are on paper very much the same, but when you step back and look at the bigger picture they're actually really far behind Samsung. Hardware wise, HTC are usually only a little behind Samsung, but their devices just arent a patch on the whole Galaxy S experience. I remember watching last years S3 announcement and in one of the promotional videos before they unveiled the S3 at all, were some user comments of what they expected from the next Galaxy. One of them was something like a friend who comes everywhere with you - and thats what Samsung do. I do more on my S3 than i ever did with Symbian phones im sad to admit, even if i find Android limiting in other ways.
The other manufacturers just cannot get the
whole package idea correct, which is why they're paying for it with poor market share and a bleak future.
