Welcome to esato
your idea won't work though because it would still be O2 firmware on the phone, the firmware is stored on the phone, not the sim card.

@ramstad
have you tried re-installing the java runtime environment, or upgrading if you have an old version

Hmm... can anyone assist me with installing the DSS-20 drivers. I bought
this item yesterday which claims to be a DSS-20. On the bottom is written:
Sony Ericsson
KRY 105 183 R1B
Type 4040034
03W01
I downloaded the drivers as recommended by SE from
here or directly
here.
I unzipped them to the desktop, and then plugged in the DSS-20. Up popped the Add New Hardware Wizard. But then it gets stuck. It sees the USB device but can't locate the drivers to install. I've tried directing the Wizard to the unzipped drivers folder on the desktop but it insists there are no drivers there. I've pointed it at the two .inf files (SonyEricssonDSS.inf and USBSerialPort.INF) and it says they don't contain any information about my device.
What's going on? How the hell do I install these drivers? Does anyone have any alternative drivers that come with an installer? I tried the SyncStation installer that was on the K700i PC Suite CD-ROM but that doesn't work either (it appears to install but the DSS-20 isn't usable).
The only driver that I have been able to find that will install at all is the DCU-11 driver from
http://www.sonyericsson.com/downloads/usb_driver_dcu11.zip which then happily identifies the device as a USB Cable DCU-11 (COM3) in the Device Manager.
Have I been sold something that isn't actually a DSS-20?

No update on the O2/Vodafone problems yet, and we probably won't get anything new this weekend anyway.

This sounds like the problem ramstad is having. That definately is the DSS-20 though, exactly the same as mine - even with the hole for holding the stick on the P800. Very strange that it won't recognise the drivers you downloaded as thats exactly what I did. In fact I was just this minute able to uninstall the device, plug back in, and xp set it up automatically because the drivers are installed. Strange - is this a common problem, have you tried a search.
EDIT: just had a quick search and if it doesn't say DSS-20 on the bottom then it could just be a modified DCU-11. And i don't think you can use this to do the online upgrade. Refs:

I've got a nasty feeling we've got DSS-20's that aren't really DSS-20's. They're DCU-11's in disguise.
According to the SE Update Service "not all SyncStations supports this service. The label on the bottom of your SyncStation should say DSS-20 or DSS-25."
Mine doesn't actually say DSS-20 anywhere on it.
I think we've been supplied with early SyncStations that don't have the required connections. It's probably why they're so cheap on eBay.
Wonder how friendly my eBay seller will be about getting a refund or exchange?
Anyway, don't buy a DSS-20 from
5tech*co*uk in the meantime.

Yeah, just finished editing my post. If it doesn't say DSS-20 or DSS-25 on the base then you can't use it to do the online upgrade, no matter what other numbers are on the base. I'm not sure what you could do, other than try and get hold of a proper one. Mine is a real DSS-20 though, as its printed on the base - its very confusing that SE chose to do this as the only visible difference is a small code on the bottom.

OK, I got my K700i from my local O2 shop about a month ago. The K700i box has a "security seal" sticker on it with a date written on the sticker of 27/07/04.
Why am I telling you this ?... Becaue I have just successfully updated my phone about 15 minutes ago !!!
Now, whether some O2 supplies were either unbranded or perhaps "partially branded" and I was lucky enough to get one of these, or whether some O2 firmware has been released... who knows.
All I can tell you is that mine IS an O2 phone bought from an O2 shop and had an O2 wallpaper when purchased, but it just updated fine with a DSS-20.

Wow, thanks a lot for telling us arthurfuxake, glad you got yours updated. I'm just going to try mine now and i'll report back...
EDIT: Didn't work for me, so maybe you have an unbranded O2 phone - lucky

Very strange that Jools also bought his DSS-20 from that site but it turned out not to be a DSS-20. Seems like maybe they don;t know about the difference and its kinda a lucky dip.
