@O2, absolutely correct friend. Great words again.
Words from the Holy Quran regarding the end of time.
Chapter 40 Verses 17-21 from the Holy Quran state:
"That Day will every soul be requited for what it earned; no injustice will there be that Day, for Allah (God) is Swift in taking account.
Warn them of the Day that is (ever) drawing near, when the hearts will (come) right up to the throats to choke (them); No intimate friend nor intercessor will the wrong-doers have, who could be listened to.
Allah (God) knows of (the tricks) that deceive with the eyes, and all that the hearts (of men) conceal.
And Allah (God) will judge with (justice and) Truth: but those whom (men) invoke besides Him, will not (be in a position) to judge at all. Verily it is Allah (alone) Who hears and sees (all things).
Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the End of those before them? They were even superior to them in strength, and in the traces (they have left) in the land: but Allah (God) did call them to account for their sins, and none had they to defend them against Allah."

they may not have associated with those sorts of people, but they weren't entirely ignorant of the world either. they new such people already existed, or else there would have been no one to denounce or point to as examples of what not to do.
i think the point is that most prophetic statements are generally vague to maximise there applicability to multiple circumstances. in the case of religious prophecies, they are generally invested with a high degree of self-interest - hence they contain quite a few references with which the people of the time will identify, and which reference constants of human existence (greed, mistrust, dishonesty, moral turpitude, etc.) because they will ALWAYS exist. there is also a fair slap of "if you follow our way you can delay the end of the world because you will not fall into this set of behaviours". that's a neat way of getting people to join. (oohh look - i'm a cynic!
)
@axxxr: a couple of those points for the end of the world seemed a bit contradictory (e.g clothes made of silk vs. people wearing animal skins)

I think I must be a cyncic too then. Religious texts do have their place and who are to say with any degree of authority that such predictions will not happen? Personally I don't think they will, I see them as being more general as gelfen mentioned.

It will probably be something natural or environmental that will be our downfall - not terrorism - and it will probably be our own stupid fault for being so greedy and short-sighted
