Vodacom is the 1st cell network in SA to have a wimax licence.............@Brix you always speak about VODAFONES LIMITATIONS.Did you know all 3G phones have DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT(DRM).So what this means what you download on you phone,you cannot transfer it to your friends via BT.For you to transfer it .You have to run it through a DRM software on a pc.Then your friends phone must be connected to your pc for them to get it.ANYTHING THAT DEALS WITH 3G HAS LIMITATIONS because like what you said in your previous post.The networks want to increase their revenues.Another thing about Vodafone live,Vodacom gives its dealers commision for everything a customer buys on that portal.In time to come i fell sorry for companies like exactmobile,35050.They will be doomed or they must supply content to the networks if they want to be in business.............HSDPA WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR................HSUPA COMING SOON TOO.

Today,as you read this,there is a small application for a S60 cellphone,which allows you to place a internet call via bluetooth to any other pc or S60 cell using the application or even a land line anywhere in the world if you care to open a account.Now this application is more of a joke because bluetooth is limited to only 10m or so.Before the end of this year Nokia will bring out a cellphone supporting wifi ! Still not much of a use but at least you can call from around 100m around your pc/laptop.In 2years from now a new standard will be introduced (again nokia) is called wimax and then the cell-voip-internet call will really make sens !

A SA company already has the solution for VOIP on mobile phones.It should be available from the end of this year.All you need is a Java Phone.Thats all

@Tahir What exactly are you talking about when you say 'vodacom has a licence for wimax'?Nokia hasn't even finalised the protocol yet ! They managed to stop others from doing so but the final protocol will be decided by intel/nokia and a few other companies. Even more important a bluetooth,wifi,wimax connection does not need a licence because the chance of connections bumping into each other is minimal.(unlike gsm,umts where frq ordering is needed and therefore licencing)wimax is wifi on steroids.It does frq hopping on grand scale (2-10gig!)at 25khz channel spacing you can accomodate 300000 people in one cell to talk at once till time multiplexing has to kick in! Taking that into account and the fact that no central controler is needed (each cell acts as a router/controler) what for must I pay vodacom for ?

Yeah,any company will need a licence.Companies do need to have a licence to integrate bluetooth and wifi and just about anything they haven't developed them self.After all the ones they have done the work need to be paid.A end user licence (that's me and you) does not apply.Also I would'nt be surprised if in your country the government will tax the cell companies for every frq they use in which case they may tax the end user too.It remains to be seen how many private users will really pay ! Or do you really think that all the tv users pay their licences every year? It remains to be seen how the autority will sort this one out.

The discussion over the last couple of days in this thread has really been good...especially the debate around WiMax.
Free GPRS? I don't it will happen again... Networks are making more money from data usage now then at any time since the introduction of GPRS 30 months ago. If GPRS is too expensive get a BT dongle and transfer massive files to your phone. R2/MB is cheap in any language.
