@mario2002,

Telkom have actually been testing Wimax for a couple of months now, and plan to use the technology as a "Last-Mile" solution to replace ADSL in areas where exchanges are either fibre or not financially viable to upgrade to accommodate ADSL. Wimax towers have a working radius of approx. 45km. All Wimax equipment out now is classed as 'Pre-Wimax', as a definite standard & specification has not been laid out by Intel, but this is not far away now. Where they are having problems, is with 'Mobile Wimax', and this directly affects what you have been talking about, but latest news is that the problems should be sorted out sometime in 2006. All Wimax solutions due to be launched in the near future are going to be 'Fixed-Wireless'.

Vodacom is planning on aggressively attacking the broadband internet market in this country, 3G now (mobile), SUPER 3G by December, and Wimax trials starting soon. Remember that Vodacom already has the infrastructure in place, and bear in mind the radius of Wimax towers. Only a small percentage of their towers would need Wimax antennas.

You are right,but I am not interested in the 'fixed line' wimax ! A chip supporting this has already been released by Intel.A month or so back the Intel/Nokia/Motorola alliance managed to veto the final wimax proposal by other big role players in Australia.Now remains to be seen if their proposal will be accepted as a standard.The technology is here already,only the licensing/approval/acceptance needs to be ironed out.No doubt a few more moths of 'fighting' will take place.I personally would like to see the other party's proposal been accepted.Nokia and Intel are already market leaders by far in their fields and now looks like even more is going their way :-( This message was posted from a Nokia 7650

Interesting bit of info. I have posted here before saying that I have never been able to connect via GPRS here at work.
But now that I have a 'Z800', all is working 100%...
Just another benefit to Z800 firmware over V800's

@CodeMaster... I'm confused...you used a 3G phone V800, changed the fw to Z800. Now what's the deal with GPRS reception? This message was posted from a K700i

Z800 is the original name. Well I never had or have a problem with my V800 connecting via GPRS or 3G.

On the subject of Vodacom's GPRS... Noticed today that my reception was quite choppy. I'll enquire with the technicians whether they're upgrading their base stations to be capable of 3G. This message was posted from a K700i

@Rick...don't know where you've been the last couple of months but all the networks have been charging R2/MB for out of bundle usage.

MTN South Africa charges R2/MB for their GPRS service. Does anyone know how much they charge for EDGE?

There is no information about EDGE on their website. I need the info badly.

AFAIK MTN chargers R2/MB for all data whether it be GPRS, EDGE or 3G. You should note though your usage will vary accordingly depending on which system you use. If you're using EDGE and visit streaming sites you'll end up with a massive headache when it comes time to say your bill. This message was posted from a K700i
