While myself, I wouldn't mind a thicker phone for a larger 1inch sensor and better lenses, but that's me.
I am sure Sony has been experimenting with such designs in their labs in the past as well, but something is stopping from releasing it, either internally there were conflicts or the tech is not there yet. Perhaps it was both, but now with mobile integrated more closely with Sony, both problems could be overcome and perhaps we'll see a 1inch camera on a sony phone.
There was the DSC-QX100, which was massive, if Sony could someone how make it much much smaller perhaps it would fit into a phone, like you said, similar to the CM1, which didn't really live up to the hype.

Cameras sales dropped 23% during last fiscal year.
Outside Japan, pocket cameras like those 1/2.3" cmos will be history in few years.
Then RX100 will be next.
If they turn things around, cellphones could bring more 💰 than selling those cheap cameras.

Xperia 10 II could be the last sony's 5g phone.

Edit: I’m not sure about regional models like Japan though

yeah, and it seems speakers not only pop out but also actually "move" depending on the contents on screen.

Pop-ups are fragile, really fragile while they are popped out. The unibody design will be compromised.
It's a bold design but very risky unless they have some revolutionary design that prevents damage and will ensure no dysfunction in the future.
For the last 8 years or so, I have never brought any phone from Samsung or Sony for accidental repair in their service Center. (Only software problems)
That will probably change with that design.

Maybe it's not a popup, maybe it's retractable - where you pull both ends your self? Better manual over mechanical imo. Just an idea.
Edit:
I'm thinking Nokia n95 n96 and other iterations of it. But instead of slide the camera and speakers are internal between the back and front panels.. Nokia n95 etc was huge in Australia, maybe a one time risk isn't bad for Sony.
Edit2.
I knew it was an oppa couldn't remember which one
A better version of this
