think of it like this
you have a box that is 8cm2 and you stuff 20cm2 of pixels in there - it will look very compact and smooth
BTW guys if my Z1 which arrives today has a screen the same as a Z it will be going back in the box - It needs to be as good as the ZU I had, not that the Z was bad but the ZU is in a different ballpark and I was under the impression the Z1 would be also

I think the screen looks great but I don't know what I am looking for...
How do I know what sort of screen that I have got?

Hmm.... somebody said that Sony has problem with colour accuracy at the extreme angle, but looking at Note 3, that even worst where the colour changes more than Xperia Z1.
Why people complain about the viewing angle on Xperia Z1 when others even worst ?

unless this was posted, sorry in advance but it seems the new iphones with their retina displays also differ from model to model due to the different suppliers
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7340/the-iphone-5c-review
The iPhone 5c's display is identical to that of the iPhone 5 and 5s. It's the same 4-inch 1136 x 640 Retina Display that Apple launched last year. Apple seems to multi-source the panel as the quality of the one in my 5c review sample was the best iPhone Retina Display I've ever tested. I'm presenting a subset of our display tests below, if you want more detail you can check out our iPhone 5s review:

I am almost certain, after doing so much research on the displays panel.. that sony is using S-PVA panel with triluminos.
the S-PVA panels were devolped by a joint between samsung and sony. although sony has sold their share to samsung in 2011.
what does that mean ?
Great viewing angles
great and fast response time
Great Contrast ratio
so yeah that is an awesome screen we got there on the XPERIA Z1.
