Gec Chia canned a buzzer-beating jumper and led the Ateneo Blue Eagles to the championship round of the 65th UAAP cage wars with a pulsating 72-70 conquest of University of the East at the Araneta Coliseum.
Chia sent Ateneo fans in a frenzy when he gamely flicked the game winning shot, which found its mark as the final buzzer sounded.
His end-game heroics likewise gave the Blue Eagles another shot at the title, which they will dispute in a best of three series with arch rival and defending champion De La Salle next week.
Ateneo lost to La Salle in last year's finals.
Chia, who finished with 11 points, three rebounds and one assist, tied the score for the last time at 70-70 in the last 35 seconds with a short jumper.
UE, which was armed with a twice to beat advantage, had the opportunity to take the last shot and earn a finals berth, but ace playmaker Paul Artadi lost the ball in the closing 7.8 seconds and paved the way for Chia's last second heroics.
