As i'm sure you know, the problems stem from the Russian side, there is absolutely nothing i or any of the other non HQ staff can do to sort the matter out, i'm equally (if not more) frustrated about it than you.

Does it stem from some sort of security measure that they have implemented to try & stop this sort of attack happening attack or is it just an error with the forum?

I believe it's a measure to decrease the effects of the Ddos attack (which actualy persists still), a number of counter measures have been introduced which do appear to be succesful, however the log in difficulties some members are experiancing are a side effect of those measures.

that is the mistake that I'll regret for the next couple of days, I can't log in now!
I wish I knew the special circumstances under which I managed to log in earlier today.

perhaps they're waiting for the DDOS attack to end before they end these strict (and buggy) security procedures, I hope not, I only wish everything ends before this count down does:
