I just get annoyed with people claiming how great iPhones are, yet they're so basic. Yes they have great innovative features that other companies like Nokia have implemented in their device. But that is what makes phones like the N8 better imo. They have their own depth of technology and add in other functions that some companies use as their main features.

But if they're so basic, why is it so difficult for Nokia to implement features from the iPhone that make them so basic?

One example: media player resume! I will probably end up buying an N8 within a week or so, and the feature from the iPhone I will miss most is resume when playing large media files (audiobooks, podcasts, videos). If I stop playing in the middle of an audiobook, long podcast or video, then I don't want to sit and fast forward to the same place the next time I resume the same. How the iPod player works is more like tape than CD in that sense. Shut off your tape player or VCR and the switch on again and the playback will resume from the same place.

@ false_morel - Ive seen every colour, my favourite is the orange which i own simply because its different and i doubt ill see another person with it. Ive seen several N8 owners in the street this past 2 weeks since mine was being replaced. They were all black or silver. Im glad mine is unique - a bit !

Ah! Thanks for the feedback..

Actually Orange is usually a favorite color of mine in general..
But I'm afraid it would somehow rather look just feminine!
You know, fits a female owner better.. What do you get to say about this?

I'm actually tending to get either that or the green.
Problem is I'm not coming across any display handsets! Only Silver so far!!
It seems I have to go blind.. Most probably the green then.

There's one attracting offer by o2! 49€ advance payment, then 17,5€ for 24 months.. A total of 469€.. Only the phone.. No sim cards or taarifs included. It ironically better than paying cash! Cheaper in total, and o2 have the green available.. Only ones so far!
Every piece is sold out though. I'm afraid it could last till christmas.

Etaab
Ive had it happen the other way with quite a lot of the .flv vids i transfered from my X10, on the N8 they just play the audio, no visual, must be due to the built-in player, i hope the CorePlayer team are working on a S^3 version, they always knew how to overcome the built-in player's limitations with their app.

FLV movies play just fine in the free VLC player on the iPhone
So if I buy the N8 then I'll need to keep the iPhone as a second phone

Yeah, most of my flvs are around 720x480@30fps to 848x480@30fps, with a few between 320x24 to 640x480, i watch them on the X10 using RockPlayer or YXPlayer Neon and they play fine, the N8 has a built-in flv player, but will not play ones above VGA (640x480), im sure the hardware is capable its just the software thats limited, im not sure if thats by the OS or the player itself. These manufacturers all suck at video players, im realy hoping the guys behind CP are working on a S^3version to exploit the N8's Broadcomm GPU.

@ false_morel - i wouldnt for a second regard my orange N8 as feminine. In fact its more masculine than the rest. When i originally received my first orange N8 i was rather disappointed by the colour, it was darker than i thought it would have been. Its more of a rust colour orange than bright neon orange. So not for a second would i say its feminine. It looks classy, different and refreshing coming from the typical black, silver or white phones.

@ Tsepz_GP - i transferred two films, the Bourne Identity which played but no sound. The second Bourne Supremacy, which plays perfectly. Strangely as far as i can tell both videos were encoded using the exact same codecs. The one which works perfectly is slightly better quality also so i dont think the N8's hardware or software is struggling to play the videos. Both are also 720x400 pixels so i dont think the N8 again is limited to its own screen resolution except for some video file types. These are both AVI files. Any limitations i think are simply software based on the default media player. Hopefully an app will come which can play much higher resolutions (if it does not exist already since i havent searched).

As for the battery meter, i fully agree often the first bar takes the longest to drop, but i just think thats how Symbian performs since its been that way since my first S60 experience back in 2002.

@ AbuBasim - i understand what you're saying, but i dont find it a big deal. In fact usually if im watching a film, video or listening to music or a podcast ive often paused the playback and then hit the menu button to leave it running in the background. Since Symbian S60 went all touch driven with the 5800 ive noticed the same resume function appears to be missing which you have on your iPhone. So its not something Symbian have no idea how to do, because my N95 8GB could do it, but for some reason its absent on the Satio / N97 etc, and on current Symbian devices such as the N8.

Core Player .......Shit,haven't heard about that player for a long time. All I can say is I'm personally glad to see the back of Symbian.Scouring Ipmart looking for apps ect (thank God Ovi came along) Also take those words with a pinch of salt because I havent had much experience with the latest Symbian gadgets but I just know they not for me.
Enjoy your N8 etaab.An Orange N8.Very cool.Different.
Looking at the pictures on the first page I would say my favourite colour is the Silver one.

The faulty N8s issue is one ive kept my eye on since October, i was told that other manufacturers have issues in this forum which is true, but phones constantly rebooting and eventualy never rebooting again is a huge issue, i kept quiet as i knew as more get them the more this issue will rear its ugly head, Nokia did admit to it though: http://dailymobile.se/2010/11[....]er-fault-manufacturer-reveals/ but they claim its a smaller number, the same way they did with the N97 and then eventualy they admitted it was a disaster.
My N8 has rebooted 4times since i recieved it last week, looking on Twitter my fellow reviewers are also experiencing reboots, not to mention Nokia Discussions and some network sites, all the same thing, the last time i saw an issue like this on such a scale was with the dead SE K800s. My N8 rebooted even during a purchase at Ovi Store, i almost flipped out, luckily it wasnt processed.
By the way the Nokia C7 is apparently having the same issues to, Eldar at Mobile-Review posted an investigative article trying to find out what is causing the N8 and C7s to reboot and/or die, it's all speculation at this point he doesn't come to an answer ,makes for an interesting read and he suggests rather buying the N8/C7 after they've had their 1st couple of FW updates early next year: http://mobile-review.com/articles/2010/n8-brak-en.shtml
I realy like the N8, and couldn't agree more with that article Bono, it has decent hardware but not so great software although some of it e.g. WebTV is just excellent, so is Photo Editor and Video Editor, the rest leaves much to be desired, i hope the updates next year will change all that, and i realy hope Nokia find out what exactly is causing the problems, everytime my N8 freezes i just hope it does reboot and doesnt die as the last time it froze i was going to be left stranded where i was if it did die, my confidence in it has been ripped away unfortunetly.

Yeah if you take the camera away from the n8 its a rather ordinary phone. I think Symbian should be put to rest now it seems even with a newer version Nokia still cannot make the OS work right. I have not had one single reboot with the Desire HD although battery life is crap. I played with a live n8 last week the interface for me coming from Android still felt clunky and slow
