How was it that you managed to get the D500 to use Edge? Doesn't that need to be a built-in thing in the phone? or is it like push-to-talk, i.e., a software that can be installed separately?

o i forgot to mention.. the D500 is identical to the D500E except for software.. the D500E has edge.. hence the E.. but the only difference is the software to enable it.. the D500 has that ability but only via secret menu.. its still being questioned if it truly is edge.. but the results show that it is an edge connection

And where is that D500E sold, geographically I mean?
And can that software be downloaded to the normal D500? And has anyone really tried Edge on it? your feedback is truly appreciated.

D500E is sold in Italy.. and is beginning to appear online.. u can download the D500E firmware and buy the serial cable for the D500 and flash it on your fone.. many ppl have done that.. and it also adds voice dialling capabilities to ur phone which is great.

Now that is really wierd, have two phones with same hardware but one have EDGE disabled. But really, is EDGE worth it. Today in Al ahram Voda had an ad for its data services and man are they expensive. LE15 per MB when you don't pay anything, which I don't know if that means you pay extra for data services on post paid or LE15 is for pre-paid. And do you really need EDGE?
And regarding the D500, while it is a great phone, but its Samsungs first,
have been great for a long time
And the upcoming phones from
are said to have EDGE, like S500(aka Ellen), but we'll see on the 13th. Another thing is Samsung don't have any good candybar phones and the D500 would be too small for me anyways. And another BIG factor is most Samsungs are silver clamshells which make me think of them as a brand for Ladies. And if D500 is good, then K750 is just too good to be true, but then it is

EDGE is really cool because it is much faster than GPRS.. and GPRS isn't that expensive at all.. normal usage won't even get u 1mb in a month.. its quite cheap compared to a lot of other places aorund the world. Any vodafone subscriber is allowed to sign up for vodafone live which charges 15 LE for 1 MB of usage.. and minimum charge is 10 kb.. if u check ur email and go to a bunch of sites using the google xhtml version which simplifies sites.. u will only get up to maybe 500k.. its quite cheap when u think of it that way..
hey.. any of u live in toronto that are egyptians?

Well, I don't live in toronto. I don't think mahora does either. And I only check Esato on wap, but I must say it goes through my credit so easily. And LE15 is NOT cheap. In india its almost free, or just a flat rate and you don't get charged by MB. Some carriers in the UK have cheap/free GPRS so LE 15, although I think I'm charged LE20/MB, is way too much.

@ Tarekf & mustafabay
Remember guys that it's only been a little over just a couple of years since GPRS has been introduced to Egypt, so carriers still try to have their ROI (Return On Investment) out of it. The only way GPRS is gonna get cheaper is when a newer technology is introduced, letting the old one grow out of use by time. So EDGE is not a bad idea after all. EDGE is also good for downloads, especially huge ones that the coming generation of phones will allow (especially those with hard drives)
& @mustafabay
I see nothing wrong in Samsung. I think you have to respect the no. 2-to-be worldwide mobile manuf. (They already have taken out Motorola in Q2, 2004, and Nokia in US market mobile sales in the whole of 2004). You have to understand their mentality, then you'll get to respect them. Their strategy is simple: work with what you have, then what you don't will then work for you. What they had was the ultra-huge Asian market. They were clever enough to realize that if they made it in that market, then they will have a shot at the world title. And they did. It's like a boxing match, if you work with your weakness and turn it into a strength, then your Unstoppable. And they're not. Why do you think, Samsung is not YET concentrating on Candybar phones in their portfolio? Simple. They're just not yet in full gear for the no.1 position. They know it and are working on it. When they're are, they will sweep everything else in the way. For the past years they have been eating away from the manuf. on top of them little by little. They're letting themselves grow on the world. Then when the right time comes, and with huge backup from the Undeterred Asian market place, they will take out everbody else, especilayy those who keep goofing around with the tastes and needs of their customers like Nokia.
Those were the objective aspects why I think you should change your views concerning Samsung. Subjectively speaking, and since I know you have big hands
, take a look at the killer called Samsung Thor (They got that right
) or Samsung I300. It simply kills. Windows Mobile 05 (Magneto), a 3-GB microdrive, and a nicely fit 1 mega pixel camera. Now for its looks, Compare its looks with its Nokia rival the so-called N91. I leave the judgement to your taste.
Just this fast comparison tells you where both companies are going.

A closing remark that I forgot, but deserves a place of its own. I have no bias for or against any specific manuf. My previous phone was a Nokia, my current is an SE, and my next might be Samsung.
Again, The point is Nokia lead themselves to losing me, SE earned themselves a customer when they satisfied my current needs with the k7, and Samsung might as well acquire a tiny addition to their market share if they deliver and come up with the Thor
