i agree.
too many ppl just remove the flip at the shop before starting to use the phone.

flip is useful in P9xx series because of their UI design.

but if the UI in the P5 is an improved one; then not having a flip is not a problem..... in fact it's very good.

@razec

I guess Nokia and Sony Ericsson secretly traded marketing strategy

SE used to do 1 all-rounder, now they're diversifying it. Nokia use to throw up a whole bunch of phones, now they're doing 1 all-rounder.

Oh no NOT THIS again!

How many ppl just got rid of the flip on the P900/910/990 ?? Hmm. SE realized this and probably poled this as well and realized it was only going to not be used, since its touchscreen and all right?!

O h no Wish we could have avoided this...
I've used my P900 with a flip and still need the flip on my P990. I guess it has to do with individual usage patterns, I just find it so much more convenient to have the flip on.
I did take the flip off for a week or so and it was just not convenient for me. I come from a Palm background so it should have been easier for me but with a phone the flip is simply a necessity.

@makbil- that's exactly how I feel! Still using my p910i with flip on and loving it. Also tried flipless and hated it.

The P800, P900, and P910 all needed the flip, no question - without it, full screen UIQ2 was in no way optimised for finger use, and just couldn't be used one-handed very easily, if at all.

In the P990, SE deliberately arranged its version of UIQ3 so that it was the same - difficult to use one-handed without the flip, with the soft buttons positioned at the top of the screen for example, and only the qwerty keyboard available below the screen. But there was no need for this. The version of UIQ3 that was released on the M600i, before the P990 even came out, was designed for one-handed use without the flip. They did this simply by moving the soft buttons to the bottom of the screen, within easy thumb reach, and adding a dual-use keypad that had standard phone keys as well as qwerty. The same, ultimately successful design which was used a year later on the P990's successor, the P1.

With this design, there is simply no need for the cut down "flip closed" mode found in the P990. Rather than a limited selection of cut-down apps especially made for the P990, all the full screen standard UIQ3 apps can be used one-handed on both the M600i and P1. If they don't build and improve on that in the P5, rather than revisiting the pointless flip designs of the past, then UIQ will be going backwards rather than forwards.

flip is a MUST for my p910i! just cant type as fast using anything else! and it is so much convenient, to switch on bluetooth, to send n recieve sms with Awesome T9, to make calls, one hand operation its the best! i really don't know if i can get used to a non-t9 phone if the p5i is going to be that way...

All UIQ3 phones have predictive text (t9) in the same way your P910 has, the only difference is that you use a different keyboard to enter the initial string of the word from which the phone will then provide you with suggestions. So, i am guessing the P5i will be exactly the same if it has a keyboard, but we don't know that yet, do we?

I agree with Boinng. I've had my P1 for 4 months now and don't miss the flip. In fact, I find it far easier to use than my previous P990 with the flip.

The simple act of moving the soft keys to the bottom of the screen has transformed UIQ3. It took me a while to get used to the rocker keys for text input but now I find them easier than those of the P990 (I never tried the P910 - the fold down keyboard and tiny keys just did not appeal).
