How the hell does it work???

If it is to take continuous pictures 1 second before and after pressing the shutter... OK I can understand the after but but 'BEFORE'?

Is it like NVR/Hard disc recorder where it is continuously recording? Otherwise how the hell would it accomplish the before bit?
