The slowness you are talking about above is just due to the slow bandwidth of mobile internet. This speed would be the same on any phone. but before you said that using music and the internet together causes memory issues. I repeat again, if playing music while viewing an internet page, even full html, causes your phone to have low memory, that's poor performance.

Actually there is no prob with music + web. People dont realise this. The music playing is not the RAM hogger. It is the visualisation of the music player UI that hogs the RAM. So once you have started the music, click on the back button on the music player until the "phone" option is shown. Click on this and immediately music player goes in the background and unloads the the unnecessary UI components. You immediately see a lot of RAM being released. DONT just press the menu key to put the music to background as this does not unload the music app UI components.

I never have any issue with music player + web. The music player app takes up only 0.7Mb of RAM. The main issue is the OSS browser which use 5-6Mb of RAM just to load itself. Load up a web page of 1-2Mb with animations +wifi + music + cache + all other running background processes then you may run into memory issues.

Run Web app (OSS Browser) several heavy news sites simular to cnn.com NO MOBILE sites, Run A-GPS (another improvement to help RAM, not really needed unless double the RAM would be an issue, hmm?), Play a playlist, Run a Java app, and a PDF viewer with 500Kb page document

Does this have anything to do with K850 being better at running Java? As far as I know K850 can't do some of the above because it dont have those functions. [ This Message was edited by: mib1800 on 2007-09-21 18:55 ]

Hmm PDF = Java app (FREE – just like the S60 app on S60; ability to add bookmarks too).
A-GPS – specific headset is compatible with K850/K790a. It uses Java as the GUI, but not to my liking, again I can wait for a better AGPS solution.
Playlist? Sorry SE phones have S60 beat all kinds here! (I’ve read lots of reviews of playlist on N95, N73ME edition and a few others.) So which app are you referring too that SE phones (recently) cannot do, that I’ve mentioned above?

Dialing a phone is NOT nitpicking. A fool would say that who DOES NOT commute dialy on a packed bus, subway or street car. Grabbing the phone out my pocket with my LEFT hand (I'm right handed) the phone IS SECURE. Using your opposable thumb to slide the phone up means "naturally" your N95/other slider is NOT clasp in your full hand just the tips of your finger tips & the heel of your palm/wrist. Don't think about it just do it. You'll see how natural it is for MOST ppl. Now imagine getting BUMPED and foraging through pairs of feet, the phone getting kicked around, and HOPE some woman with a sexy skirt - sexy enough to distract you, but prude enough to drop a PURSE smack down on your cheek because she caught you looking up! (I watched this happen to a guy just yesterday with HIS N95)!

What does this have to do with "which is FASTER in dialing a number?"

Well READ it and try it in a crowded environment, before passing it off as laughable. I’ll bet you won’t find it as hilarious then. (just don’t let it get bumped out of your hand – using your non-writing hand, if your ambidextrous, then you cannot test  )

Active menu does NOT show you an ACTIVE application now does it? Just shorcuts. S40 can ONLY run 1 JAVA app at a time. Don't GET me STARTED with S60 - EVEN Nokia cannot decide on CONCRETE placement of settings, apps etc. I can by the N96, N76, E65/i, E90 and NOT one is the SAME for everything in the menu

Are we comparing S60 with SE UI? How do you find which apps are running in SE UI? - Press Activity Menu button then scroll to right tab. How do yo do it on S60? - Long Press menu key. Which is more user friendly?

Placement of menu items? S60 allows you to reorder/regroup these apps or setting icons according to your own preferences and logic in the main menu. You can even have sub-folders/menus. SE UI menu organisation is fixed with 12 icons. Where does your install Java apps goes? All lumped together. Good luck with finding the app to launch if you have 100+ Java apps installed. I’m comparing S60 GUI with SE UI. However I still think it more fare to compare it with S40 as its not a smartphone. SO when did S60 3rd edition allow someone to move say Data Configuration sub-menu OUT of Settings and into say a folder from main icon list called “WOW” that I create? I’ve seen nor read NOTHING to this regard. BlackBerry OS 4.2.2 can on the BB Curve. I can pull any menu within a folder and put it elsewhere or even create a NEW folder of my own. I can even HIDE folders at will. I’ve seen NOTHING on ANY other platform enable this yet. I’d like to see it proven if it CAN on S60. Ha.

@mib; what good is the activity menu on the HOME screen when you want to switch to another application? You no longer HAVE the activity menu. You'd have to goto the home screen, then file through your running apps THEN back into the one you want. SE Activity menu, highlight & select BAM you in your app RIGHT where you left off.

Just long press the menu key and the task manager is shown. You can go to any apps easily. Are you sure you have use the S60 UI before?

Its been a while since I played with S60 UI. 2nd edition and my many helpful posts in the original S60 Nokia thread in the Other Manufacturers thread can testify. However 3rd edition has been playing with its menu way too often > something that I feel is not a good thing save for clamshell phones like N76/6290.

I’m not against Nokia nor their GUI on S60 – I think its fine the way it is, however it CAN and SHOULD be tweaked for speed and also for intuitive usuage and response. Some thing on my 6620 – which was a WORK HORSE even compared to todays S60 3rd edition devices when it came to running apps. Themes are great on S60 but thus far I like them better on my K790a. I also love the clarity of my screen. Even Apocolypso on a sites (HUGEST S60 FAN, owns that site) cannot stand screens on S60. Both of our eyes are not as great as 20/20 – mine are not too bad but I do get strain and cannot refuse wearing glasses any longer.

N95 although incredible in features, cpu speed, great amount of apps that is surprisingly growing is STILL not a design I can see myself using daily. I like the 6290, and loved the outer design contest submits that ppl done for the shell of the N76. But Nokia continues to refuse WiFi in a flip-phone design (I didn’t mention clamshell here because then the E90 would fit into this category). If Nokia puts S60 3rd edition FP1, along with WiFi, in a dual screen flip phone that is NO thicker than K850 then I may just bite. Better if their candybar form factor is no TALLER than a K850 either (E63 was VERY close it offers soooOOooo much but just TOO tall). 5300 is ugly and that Sport phone is nasty in design but suits somebody out there.

I left S60 as Max has shown MANY ppl here just how far we can go with SE GUI and I greatly thank him for that. I couldn’t resist the SE GUI. If they completely kill that & not for the better then I’ll have too look at HEAVY modding to get it back OR another platform all together.

Main reason I prefer SE …. The network towers are built, maintained, and implemented by Ericsson more preferred than Nokia (they specialize in switches that interface with the towers, but so does Ericsson). On my network, Rogers Wireless, uses Nortel Networks as the backbone for network, Ericsson towers exclusively, and a few rare Nokia switches, along with Nortel switches, with Ericsson being the most predominant. I know this first hand because I used to work there for wireless and I have many friends still in data & networking which keep me informed. Basically features that are on the network are accessible by GSM core network codes or menu’s of my SE phone. Some are removed like “111Hello get back at me” which sends a confirmation SMS to you WHEN the other person receives “Hello get back at me” (they don’t see the 111) on their phone – not just the network receives it. So I use the SE gui to get me the same thing.
