Heh. It's strange.
As Stills should be improved under the update,
look at Video - it's clearly better than main rivals.
Software....
it's quite obvious that something's wrong with the camera. it's either a lens or software fault. look at how the object on the left side appear sharper while most of the right side show blurriness.
i really expected this to happen. sony should have made sure that review unit is perfect. now, there's no good word from gsmarena. phonearena will most likely render worse judgment.
or maybe i was just expecting so much from sony.
i can't really believe it loses to S4 in the camera comparison tool.

@northmonkey - what i have to say is what I always say in regards to cameras. The person using it makes a huge difference. Also, it is a bit suspect that GSMarena is using the same sample images that they released weeks ago in their "preview". Is it the latest firmware? who knows. they don't say. It's easy to make a low light photo look noisy depending on the light and the settings. I'm can't figure out how to download the sample images from GSMarena to look at the EXIF info, cause they don't even give the settings used in low-light, so who knows what's going on there.
Prime example is the photo gallery posted by those over at UnleashThePhones. The lowlight photos from the Z1 there are fantastic and a hell of a lot less (if any) noise than those GSMarena has posted in what looks like more light than UnleashThePhones took their photos.

They didn't mention the 3x Zoom either, also I thought Steadyshot was hardware, didn't realise it was digital software.

i am looking forward to Geoffxx's "review". I have a feeling he will be brutally honest and unbiased.

gsmarena got a good display but faulty camera.
no, they took new sample photos. notice that they now depict a sunny morning. the previous ones were taken on a cloudy day. really disappointing although i already expected that based on the old samples.
looks like the legendary japanese regard for quality is now history. many units with various faults. i can't really blame gsmarena for having produced those samples. over the week, i have been tracking sample photos of the z1. i have seen similar results from a number of samples—noisy, sometime dark, and sometimes washed out.
the z1s in the market don't really have consistent quality. sony hastily released it so here's the result. also, i'm still fuming at the mouth over those "lottery" displays. this is supposed to be the best time for sony to release an almost faultless product since it is gaining a lot of attention. alas, it still continues doing its old ways.

ah you're right. it is sunny vs. cloudy.
in any case, i'm not worried. Z1 will still be mine and when I get it, I will post plenty of photos in this thread and the other photo thread.
For those who have a Z1.. if you could post some photos, that'd be great!
I do find it funny that there's nobody in the note 3 or iphone5s threads pointing out all the negatives of each. It just seems like everyone likes to hate on sony.

I'm glad Sony meet your standards, and seem to be improving in your view, but for many of us? Many things still need to be addressed, from FW Updates (the Z1 launching with 4.2.2 at this point, same - for LG, but their entire update policy is awful needs an overhaul), display, battery, codec support for AVI, MKV and XviD formats - WTF!? this is STILL ongoing??? Amongst others, and now the Z1 camera also seems not to be the shining star it was meant to be.
You know what? I'm actually done with the Z1, there just seems to be too many letdowns, some of which were highlighted by the Singaporean leaker who had a test Z1 just before announcement, much of what he pointed out has come up even in the final Z1.
Interesting some here said they'd wait for a credible review from GSMArena, and now that the review isn't as positive as some expected it is being questioned. This is the same thing that seems to happen every year WRT Sony and its fans, vicious cycle.
I'm going to sit back and have a laugh at the excuses now, this place is going to be full of them, right up until the Z2 arrives at which point the Z1's letdowns will finally be admitted to but at least the Z2 will be here by then, and so it goes on...

Z1 is not perfect. No device is. But overall, in my opinion, it is better than anything else on the market in the same class. If you're done with Z1, then ok. It's not for you and you really have no reason to post in this thread.

that's really beside the point. if you have faults, should you look at what others have to justify them? the faults of other devices are not a concern to a prospective phone buyer who is bent on getting the sony brand. if you are planning to shell out a good sum, you have to be sure that you're getting the quality your money deserves. we've seen better reviews of the device. the one on e-price, which pitted z1's camera against samsung s4's, showed how superior z1's camera is. however there are many other samples that also show s4's apparent advantage.
it will be better to really try the phone first at the shops before buying. preorders and online orders are not wise options for now.
@mogoo
i think tsepz wasn't really considering a z1 purchase at all. he's just spying on what sony fans are up to. he's on samsung's side. he's just worried if sony's new flagship beats the device he's supporting. that's been the tone of most of his comments.
