My experience with my carrier of Roaming outside the country, what I did was I notify them one week before my departure. I give them the date & time to the country of my destination, some few questions, asking you if your cell phone is tri-band, then 24 hrs before my flight I got a confirmation. Sure enough, as soon as I arrive to the airport of destination my roaming connection is up and running. I’m able make & received calls, its just the roaming charge is too much, if I remember correctly it’s $2.50/minute.

I end-up buying a SIM card (in the country of destination) much cheaper than using your roaming connection.

Some country (like Philippines) you don’t need an operator assistance to activate your Roaming, just a matter of several keystrokes, then turn OFF your cell phone. When you arrive to the country of destination just simply turn ON the unit, wait for the Roaming logo and you’re connected!

@ miss uk

I think a UK PAYG sim will work here. If you manage your account online you should be able to enable international roaming or just give o2 a call. I met a lady last year that was using an o2 PAYG sim, she used my computer to get the phone number to top up outside of UK. Whether or not it worked I don't know but my guess is that it did.

Watch out Italy here we come!

I recommend the same. A sim you would buy in the country you are vacationing. You get a local number and most of your calls are local anyway.

That is a disadvantage, when you have too many friends.
