largepig - Your email was well written and well intentioned.

However, I would suggest the approach itself was the problem. To be taken seriously, the owner of the site must contact SE directly. After all, SE are hardly likely to respond to someone who is not an official representative of the body that is being discussed.

No, this is a job for Laffen (or his officially appointed agency). It probable requires:

a) Phone calls to establish the correct contacts.
b) Intro letter (kept brief but to the point)
c) Follow-up calls
d) Finally a meeting to discuss a definitive propostion.

Wuz,

I hear what you say with regard to the intricacies of setting up a pay site. Once it is done though it is done. There must be automated systems for dealing with subscription renewal, payment etc.

I cannot see how putting up a raffle prize each month will make any great difference to the amount of money coming in. After all, we all have a phone which is exacly the reason we came here in the first place.

If we make it compulsory to pay to get the content then people will either pay or go elsewhere. Either way we either get the site paid for or reduce traffic. Both of which will go towards meeting the costs.

I know it's not pretty but we should stop looking for someone else to pay for our pleasure. SE have nothing to gain from paying for us to get web content.

Wuz> I think you're right, i just wanted to show some support for comminucation that may have taken place between SE and laffen.

I think although the main communication needs to go through the right channels it is still important to demonstrate that there is a target audience here for SE to take advantage of. I think that ultimateley the decision makers are unlikeley to read through the forums, and will therfore underestimate the community and the collective knowledge there is here, and also how much time and money people here have saved SE in support costs!!!

how about having a monthly access code that is sent by reverse text message. that way any bits that laffen wants to keep free could be accessed without the code, and the stuff thats really costing him (us posting on the forums, i guess) could be available only to subscribers.
if it is charged as a reverse text then under 18s shouldn't have any problem with paypal or direct debits etc. users would apply for their monthly code and laffen could charge for sending it.

a) Done. The contact is established, but no one is willing or able to make a decision about supporting Esato. Even if the cost for will be the same as a couple of new phones.
b) Done. Sent 7-8 weeks ago.
c) Wait for feedback and go back to point c)

I'm stuck in a loop here. I agree with largepig in that the decision makers probably don't read these forums.

@nwmq1
I've used tradedoubler before, but it's only aimed at Norwegian visitors.

Advertisers are on the way as we speak. So long term (until March) income is secured. But this will not help if the short term problems not are solved. Can't run ads without a web site.

Donated amount is now $406

This is big advertiseng for SE phones and it is no big deal for SE to make a donation for the site. I think thas all of us who really like this site first gonna write a long letter to SonyEricsson and say what we think about this.

Well I'll do it, are you whith me?

Gazobee - Yes, you are right about the set-up. But I fear you underestimate the difference between a fun site (funded by the owner) and a commercial venture (i.e. subsciptions). i.e At the very least, a sum has to be earmarked for continual recruitment of new subcribers via advertising. This is to counter the natural rate of attrituion that the site will inevitably expereince over the months... + a hundred other considerations that I will not bore you with.

The raffle is intended as a purely short term solution over the next 2/3 months, taking advantage of the launch of the P800. Laffen has clarified that this is the main aim as advertising is potentially in place for the longer term.

Laffen - At our company, we specialise in introducing new concepts to outside organizations. If it is any kind of moral boost, I can tell you that we sometimes have to conatct a new company maybe 20 times before we start to get heard and noticed. (most time is spent just trying to identify and then contact the decision maker).
If this is proving difficult, my advice is to identify a method that is most likely to get you noticed (i.e. on one occassion, we resorted to producing a large banner with our message and sending it fed -ex to the company involved... not very subtle I grant you)... but the point is to think laterally & above all have PERSISTENCE.
Esato is a valuable commodity. SE will support it - you just have to get to the right person. I believe the PR departments should be your first port of call.

... I realise my last post didn't add much of particular substance. So to help, I've circulated an email around my staff concerning Esato and its short term funding problems, asking for suggestions.
They are a clever lot (and do this kind of stuff for a living). Anything worthwhile that comes up, I'll post later/tomorrow.
