@j_oates
ummm, dont know where your getting this from but i think u'll find there are many free hosts offering webspace with ftp access, it is the normal way of transferring files (how else r u supposed to do it???)
the default page displayed depends entirly on the servers settings and what type of server it is makes no difference (i have apache here and if i want my default page to be uyftfdi7n.html i can

wml should be saved as wml true enough, but many wapsites are now being done in xhtml, personally i would save these as .html otherwise many browsers will handle them incorrectly (many comercial websites are now being changed into xhtml too and they will all be .html extension)
as far as front page extensions are concerned, they are a pain in the arse! theuyy were introduced by microsloth just to get a toe in on the web server market which is ruled by linux, linux is stable, and completely free to obtain (as is the 99% of the software on it) this pisses bill gits off no end (and never have to pay 4 software again)
so evry1 install linux and watch microsloth go out of business

besides mozilla is miles better (and more stable) than internet exploder.

@Aled,
I was mearly stating, that most free hosts do not support FTP access, or rather, they do, but would prefer you to use their own web-based uploaders, take a look at giocities, lycos, brinkster etc, all web-based uploads, no FTP there! Also, I know you can set the default page to what you like, thats exactly what I said, but again, most free web-hosts do not like you doing this, and therefore you have to use the ones they set, e.g. index.htm, or default.htm, very few have index.wml as a default page, again, try doing it on virtually any free web-host! I have my own server, and know how they are run, I have set mine up so it has default.wml as a defualt page, so free ones have this, most DON'T!
As for Front-Page extentions, I don't remember mentioning them, but they are actually useful, they mean on a IIS server (excuse me mate, I admire your support for 'nix, but IIS is much more stable than it, no matter what you say... do you see any big - server dependet - online shops on Apache? Is Amazon? Is eBay? Is Tessco using Apache, NO, they use either IIS, or the more stable SUN microsystems server base) you can control MIME without actually being an admin on the system, and also help control "checkin/checkout" when a lot of people are working on a project - are you a web designer?
@orangeman
Ehm, sorry to dissapoint, but either you have not copied it exactly, or SonyEricsson don't know what there going on about... you have left out the "
Code:
<td><img alt="weather" src="snow.gif" width="17"
height="17" /></td>
<td><img alt="weather" src="snow.gif" width="17"
height="17" /></td>
<td><img alt="weather" src="sun.gif" width="17"
height="17" /></td>
<td><img alt="weather" src="sun.gif" width="17"
height="17" /></td>
<td><img alt="weather" src="sun_in_cloud.gif" width="17"
height="17" /></td>
Hope this helps you both!

greetings - Just found something pretty handy if you write in xhtml - I have found a good way to advertise your wap site for free - put a normal 'href-mailto' link on your wap site & put your wap address in there as the 'e-mail address' - When a T68i/T300 clicks on it-it brings up the SMS menu. So users who visit your site can forward your wap address to their freinds... and they pay for it!!! check the mail or big banana gifs/links on my site.

You can not create a colour wbmp, as it is actually a Greyscale 1-bit .bmp, with a changed extention for the wireless device, if it was colour, it would lose its greyscale, and if it was to have more than one colour, it would lose its 1-bit map, so no, it is not possiable. However, most (nearly all) colour phones support .gif and .jpeg as a colour image, so you will have to use them, all SonyEricsson phones from the T39 up support 4-bit Greyscale, and can read .gif, so a multi-colour .gif shows up fine on those too. If you need colour, allways use .gif, you can download a 256Exact palette from the web (used on all 256 colour devices) or I can send you it if you post your e-mail address, for use in Fireworks or Photoshop to export .gif's in correct colour for mobile devices. Make sure you allways have a .wbmp version of your site too, so (Nokia) crap phones can read your wap sites. I have a .wbmp export tool for Photoshop and Fireworks (works with Paint Shop Pro too) so you can "Save As..." in .wbmp format, and don't have to use a converter if you want it.
