You see again i think it all depends on what region of the world you live in.
Ive said this so many times on Esato now over the years its starting to convince me the reason why some phones are so faulty is the region.
Turn the clock back one year, everyone was complaining about the Satio which i had just bought. People were saying how unreliable their phone was and how many times it froze or crashed. Yet, the majority of people i know who owned the same phone as me and the amount of UK forum dwellers on this very forum didnt have any of the listed problems either. Nor did i. One year on and the N8 is no different. Software wise, id rate the N8 10 out of 10 for stability, ease of use and functionality. Id disagree with Bonovox entirely, the N8 is far from an ordinary phone.
My first N8 crashed once, my second one ive had over a week now and am pushing its limits further has not crashed once. In fact, the last time it was switched off was when i picked it up from the UPS depot on Monday 15/11/10.
So, im convinced the majority of people complaining of faulty handsets are from countries either less developed, or have lower quality assurance testing. Im not exactly saying South Africa is a third world country, but id point the finger of blame towards that particular countries standards. Here in the UK, before anything is released everything has to go through government testing to assure its safety and quality. Here in the UK ive never had a problem with any phone like people mention every time a new phone is released.
Its the exact same situation with branded firmware, which is why i always buy phones unbranded.
EDIT: oh and im glad i went for orange, recently in my bluejacking exploits the amount of Nokia N8-00 phones that have appeared on Bluetooth searches is impressive. I think here in the UK at least, the N8 has the potential to be 2010's best seller.

Hi etaab
As far as i remember, a few UK networks went as far as to temporarily not stocking both the Satio and N97 so as to get both Nokia and SE to fix them up, that's when V2.0 FW with Memory Reorganiser came for N97, didn't realy keep up with Satio but SE also released a FW.
Anyway, South Africa is 3rd world country AFAIK but is a developing country like India, Brazil etc...but our networks can be very strict on quality, and do lots of hard testing before the device is made available, N96 and N81 for example were delayed by my network multiple times as they simply didnt meet their standards, N97 also took quite a while, so they are very strict in quality control.
Some people who have issues preordered from Nokia themselves, or 3rd party online shops, its such a mixture that i doubt its completely down to region. Let's wait and see what Nokia say though.

I doubt that Nokia has local phone production all over the world. QA testing is done where the phones are produced - not at the country of destination for exported phones. And as far as I know, the testing each country does on imported electrical or electronic items, are not on quality but simply for electrical safety and amount of radiation to make sure radio interference is within allowed levels.
Eldar at Mobile-review.com has come up with the theory that the problem some N8s have been suffering from is due to overheating. That would explain why more complaints have been coming from Asia, where it is hotter. With me living in Oman, one of the hottest countries in the world, I will have to wait with my N8 purchase until I'm sure that Nokia has sorted out this problem.

Yes,the Satio was withdrawn from sale for a time at the same time as the Aino to fix problems.

Like i said, i blame it on the region. Of course its not where the phone is manufactured, since most Nokia phones are all made in the same factories in China and Finland, however i do blame it on local region specific firmwares. For example, im sure Symbian works pretty well by default in English speaking countries, the same applies to Finland.
But, im sure in other countries where they use different languages, different operators and different firmwares, they do not automatically gell as well together. I remember coming here to Esato back in 2004 with my T610, since that time ive seen the same problems since the K700i, K750i, Satio, N97, its a never ending cycle of issues whenever a new phone is released. People have complained about blur spots in the N8's images, fair enough, but its all deja-vu to me as i remember people saying the same about the S700i, K750i, Satio etc all on this very forum.
I do believe that for example, if i bought a N8 or X10 here in the UK, it would be pretty stable. If i went to India and bought the same phones, they would be pretty unstable, crash, freeze or have the problems people report on forums such as this.
@ AbuBasim - i dont think heat has anything to do with it. Nokia test their handsets in humidity labs extensively, as do Samsung and all the other major mobile players. Possibly rather than heat from outside being the issue, the internal heat of the N8 might have an issue which we're not aware of yet.
@ Bonovox - yeah CPW stopped stocking the Satio last year due to software issues, however they were not proven to be relevant. CPW had a couple of people return their Satio phones for software issues like they would with any other phone but due to bad press CPW took the bad decision to remove them from sale. Tesco, Phones4u and various other stockists kept their Satio phones on sale and such issues never actually arose in their phones. Sadly being the UK #1 retailer CPW damaged the Satio's sales unnecessarily meaning the Satio never sold as well as it could have.
It was a bad decision by CPW.

Different firmwares are made for different regions! If it's a firmware problem, then yes, it should be region specific, unless it's a major flaw in all firmwares. Which apparently is not.
If it's not a firmware problem, but rather a hardware one Nokia should have admitted it by now! No company would risk keep releasing a product on mass with a hardware flaw! It's utterly stupid.
Most probably it's a firmware problem.
And for the ones quoting Eldar: Get real, would you!
Besides, what does Symbian have to do with anything here. If it's a firmware problem I mean..
It could be though some OS bug triggered by some third party app or certain phone tweaking or a simple set of settings. Very unprobable however..

South Africa is an English speaking country, none of our local languages are put in to these phones other than English, the only other languages i can choose on the N8 are French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian and Portugues.
If im not mistaken Nokia have 3 region type firmwares:
EMEA (Europe, Middle-East, Africa)
APAC (Asia Pacific)
NAM (North America)
Each of those in their regions get the same firmware, with exception of Middle-East getting Arabic language pack, so i dont see how it can be English speaking countries who get a good firmware, as this issue has affected parts of EMEA, parts of APAC and NAM.

Heh, Apple have, their iPhone 4 still has the ever present antenna issue.
Anyway im not a firmware expert but i think its slightly more complex than only 3 firmware variations. Looking at mine, i have listed a software version, then a sub custom software version. Im sure the major firmware is pretty much the same across the board, but the custom version will not be, not to mention operator branded firmware versions.
Id also guess the majority of customers who've got branded N8 phones are the ones with issues. Like i said i never have such issues, but then i always buy unbranded.
