I was in Lexington a few weeks back and could not believe how hot it was. Last time I was there in May, I just needed a jacket. Lower 90s is typical here for June. Humidity usually puts the heat index upwards of 110F.

WiMAX trial

BellSouth and Alcatel announced today an agreement to trial Alcatel's Evolium WiMAX solution in the BellSouth lab. This agreement comes four months after Alcatel conducted the industry's first live demonstration of the newly ratified WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard.

BellSouth, the first major telecom provider to commercially launch wireless broadband using pre-WiMAX technology in the U.S., will begin lab trials next quarter based on Alcatel's standards-based universal WiMAX solution (IEEE 802.16e-2005). The trials will be conducted in the 2.3 GHz WCS spectrum.

"BellSouth continues to pave the way in wireless broadband," said Paulino Barros, chief product officer — BellSouth Retail Markets. "We are committed to increasing our broadband coverage. We look forward to working with Alcatel to assess the viability of offering a simple and seamless WiMAX solution that will extend broadband even further into our network."

In addition to its active role in the WiMAX Forum, Alcatel has been broadening the WiMAX ecosystem over the past year by cooperating with leading trendsetters to define reference usage profiles and conduct interoperability testing. With the WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard now ratified, carriers are eager to move to the next stage of market validation so as to take advantage of its unique cost, coverage and performance benefits. Alcatel's cost- efficient, high-performance Evolium WiMAX infrastructure is a truly universal broadband wireless access solution, natively supporting fixed, nomadic and mobile usage.

"Alcatel believes that broadband wireless access technology offers important strategic value to carriers looking to deliver the high-speed, high- quality services that their customers expect wherever they are," said Hubert de Pesquidoux, Executive Vice President and President of Alcatel's North American activities. "This trial with BellSouth is a significant indication that our customers agree — universal WiMAX is ready for the market, and the market is ready for universal WiMAX."

WiMAX is a new broadband wireless access technology that enables connectivity through wireless networks for fixed, nomadic or mobile use in urban, suburban and rural areas. The technology offers a cost-effective broadband access alternative where DSL is unavailable for technical or economical reasons, or a last-mile alternative to unbundling for operators who are offering a combination of voice and broadband access offers to the next generation of wireless devices. The 802.16e-2005 WiMAX standard is in fact a more advanced successor to 802.16d-2004 (called "Static WiMAX," or Revision d), and offers superior performance and flexibility in pure fixed deployment scenarios.

The Alcatel Evolium WiMAX solution will be shown in the Alcatel booth at the WCA conference June 27 through 30 in Washington DC.

Cellfire Launches Free Mobule Coupon Service Nationwide

Cellfire announced today that its free mobile coupon service is now available to cell phone users across the country. Household-name retailers such as T.G.I. Friday's and Hollywood Video are among the partners deploying the money-saving solution to consumers.

"Cellfire is the first-ever mobile application that allows consumers to save money at their favorite stores, restaurants and entertainment venues," said Brent Dusing, CEO of Cellfire. "Since our regional launch in December, we are seeing remarkable growth in both the number of users and retailers who are excited about embracing this easy-to-use solution."

"There's been talk for years about integrating location with mobile commerce — allowing cell phone subscribers to directly benefit from discounts and promotions at the stores they most often visit," said J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D., principal analyst with MobileTrax. "Now, Cellfire offers cell phone subscribers the ability to opt-in to promotional programs that provide instant, brand-name coupons in many retail store locations."

Cellfire is a free downloadable application that provides valuable coupons from a host of local and national retailers within the user's geographic region. To browse current offers, consumers click on their phone's Cellfire icon and scroll to the discount of their choice. To redeem the coupon they simply press "Use Now" and show the coupon to the cashier. Because the application resides on the handset it eliminates the need to connect to the Internet during the transaction, allowing for quick checkout times.

Current deals include rent-one-get-one-free from Hollywood Video, a free appetizer at T.G.I. Friday's, as well as numerous discounts from retailers such as 1-800-flowers.com, Carlson Travel and other local retailers.

To get Cellfire, consumers can simply go to www.cellfire.com, text to 22888 from their phones, go to HelloMoto, search "Coupons" from Cingular MEdiaNet or use various other mobile content channels.

Today's news comes after the highly successful beta launch of the service to California customers of wireless carrier Cingular Wireless. Cellfire selected California for the preliminary testing due to several factors: One-tenth of the U.S. population resides in California; the state's tech-intensive economy; and the fact that it is the 5th largest economy in the world.

More coupons if definitely what the average American needs. I doubt that that will catch on. There is a limit with what you want to be able to do with your phone.
