You know I expect a statement from Sony pretty soon saying we didn't expect demand to be so great in the west for the z1f.

You know like they did for the ps vita tv when they announced it for japan

Does anyone know the price of Docomo Z1? I am trying to figure out what Z1f may cost. I may cost around the same or slightly less IMO.

Hi,

I read that the Z1f will benefit from Docomo discounts (together with fujitsu arrows nx f-01f and Sharp aquos sh-01f, they call it osusume smartphones = recommended smartphones). So you can expect docomo z1f for free using MNP, for JPY 15,000 to renew a docomo contract, or for JPY 55,000 for an unused second hand handset. If you are out of Japan, this will be the last option, should be on amazon Japan soon after launch, but not before December!

However, the Z1 will not benefit from the discounts!
So I expect JPY 20,000 for MNP, JPY 35,000 for renewing a Docomo contract, and JPY 75,000 for a unused second hand.
If correct, this is a hard one for Sony: z1 gets out on Oct 24, same as arrows NX, but z1f only gets out in december, So Fujitsu gets 2 more month of discounts... If you think about it, this is exactly predictable and kind of in line with what i said before: Docomo is rebalancing the advantage it gave sony with xperia a discounts this summer, under pressure from the remains of Japan inc.

But the worst problem for Z1 is that iphone benefits from even greater discounts than arrows nx at docomo...
I read 16GB free for a renewing contract (docomo trying to stop bleeding clients to AU and Softbank).
So docomo, after some un-heroic resistance, has now officially become a dumb pipe.
And more importantly, Z1 will have a hard time selling in Japan!
(I still may get it - I will post why in Z1 thread )

@Shotokan81 Don't you mean shiro-rom instead of unused second hand?

This is what they say, but i think it is a nonsense as there is no more rom with a phone number hardcoded for years.

I think all it means is a handset you can use on the docomo network - that's it.

So to me a phone that pops up just after launch is a second hand unused phone, purchased with a contract and contract cancelled in 3 days time.

I see I see, that's what shiro-rom actually means. Always thought it was just a Japanese specific term for unlocked phones in Japan. Use to buy keitai until I have reached enlightenment by having data on a phone.

Supposed to mean sim unlock, but in fact the frequencies are different among operators, so sim unlocking does not take you anywhere. So in fact phones sold as shiro rom may or may not be sim unlocked, i never bought one, but I think you would not see a difference.

Yes, I see what you mean re the data plan. But the IP phone services do not allow you to call emergency numbers in Japan (this is blocked by our docomo friends). And I want it!

So in the end, once I have a docomo smartphone, after 2 years I will switch to a keitai for a cheap plan and use the smartphone for internet browsing on a mnvo using docomo network. For this reason what I would want is actually Z ultra on docomo, but no luck...

Japan Display now making 1080p WhiteMagic LCDs, hints at high-end phones with bright screens

It's been hard to appreciate the brightness of WhiteMagic LCDs when they've been limited to lower-end smartphones like the Sony Xperia P. That shouldn't be a problem from now on, as Japan Display has started mass-producing its first 1080p WhiteMagic screen. Like its ancestors, the new 5-inch panel uses white subpixels to reach outdoor-friendly luminosity (840 cd/m2) without excessive power use; it can also match typical LCD brightness levels using less energy. Japan Display hasn't said just which phone makers are using the 1080p screen, but we wouldn't be shocked if company partners like Sony get first dibs.

Screen size (diagonal)---5.0inch (12.6cm)
Number of pixels---------1,080(x RGB) x 1,920 (Full-HD)
Resolution density-------446ppi
Display mode------------Transmissive
Dimensions--------------63.24mm (W) x 117.18mm (H)
Surface luminance-------840cd/m2 (typ.)
NTSC ratio--------------70%
Contrast ratio-----------1000 : 1 (typ.)
