Once again just popping into to say "Hi"...I know its been more than a month since I've been on the forums.
My two months in the Philippines has been quite interesting- to say the least- and frustrating at times.
First off, telecommunications, and most of the economy, here is heavily regulated, as in the government can prescribe prices. One of the big political issues here is the price of sending a text message, so much so that a few weeks ago networks were ordered to lower their prices in response to rising costs.
One thing that is frustrating is the generally poor service one gets at major retailers, not to even speak of small businesses- attitudes I'd last seen back in SA in the 90s. I can write down more than 10 instances of poor service where shop assistants came at me with a "f@#&k you" attitude".
My girlfriend was here last month and we spent time on the island of Palawan which is lush and covered with rain forests and the most beautiful beaches.

@tranced: That beach doesn't come close to SA beaches, or even the ones here in the Philippines- some of which are pretty unspoilt by development.
@da wanqsta: How's Cape Town changed since the last time you were there?

Just got back to CT, after being 175-odd KM away in the Swartland/Olifantsrivier areas. The recent rain n' sunshine fluctuations have come into their own and the well-known expanses of bright flowers in the areas is something to behold and appreciate. trying to imagine all of Namaqualand now...
Still on the subject of flower power, we're off to Kirstenbosch this afternoon.
While driving back yesterday, it was amazing to see Table Mountain from as far as Morreesburg!
Took some nice pics with the cellphones; will upload plenty when we get back to the UK towards the end of the month. The laptop's browser is doing my head in here..
@ tranced:
Hi mate. Some nice beach shots there. The one with the palm trees and hut looks like a great place to visit.
@ da brixsta:
Glad to see you in these parts again!

We were about to organise a search party, LOL.
We've only been into CT itself once so far (apart from when we landed), when we went to the V&A Waterfront. That was in the evening as well. Around where we are staying, certainly Parklands seems to have seriously expanded in size , as has the amount of houses being built around Blouberg, encroaching more and more on the reserve there... lot of the older houses around Melkbos, which are in prime locations, have been demolished and turned into mega-holiday pads and B&B's...
Simcards same price as 3 years ago (!), choccies now close to R6... and R200-worth of grocery shopping looked like alarmly little...
Lots of fake brand clothing around in many of the dorpies; had to laugh at the imitation New Rock boots and Nike rip-offs in some of these smaller shops.
Right, time to check out Pep Stores now (

).
See y'all later.

@da wanqsta: I've been very busy with all sorts of stuff here but nothing that could get me shot...that will be later this year when we trek to Mindanao to work with an NGO and on a local newspaper.
About Parklands, the place has rapidly expanded especially with the housing boom of the last four years- before the credit crunch and the National Credit Act made it almost impossible for first-time buyers.
Couple of my friends live in Parklands and I almost moved there, the only drawback being the distance and peak-hour traffic from the CBD. Hell, maybe they could build light rail link.

@ Hobbster:
Forgot to mention, even one of the cops by the beached trawlers the other day was taking pics with his P1i.
Nice to see so many high end handsets around.

Wow, there were 15 people checking out the SAMD thread at the same time earlier.
@ da brixsta:
Ya I can certainly appreciate those 2 issues re moving to Parklands. I don't think that distance itself would bother me too much, knowing that those stunning beaches are a very short drive away etc, but I see what you mean as regards the peak hour traffic... eish.
It did remind me of driving home from work on the A13 in the UK..

@All: Any word on when the iPhone is making an appearance on Vodacom? My girlfriend just got one on AT&T and I'm mighty jealous...she constantly brags about all the stuff she should can do with her new toy.
