@ssls... I'm 27...and about you're post count... According to laffen and masseur posts in the regional forums don't count towards you're total posts... A classic example is myself, I've posted more than 500 posts but because most of then are in the SA discussion they don't count...guess what I don't care! This message was posted from a K700i

@ sIssIs,
Strange seeing such a common UK network slogan in the SA thread...what prompted you?

Hell, I feel like a bit of a 'toppie' here as regards age...at 34.
Can anyone beat that? I think Uncle Bob is the same age, tho.

@Mohil: There aren't any settings for PTT bcoz no network offers the service yet. In actual fact very few networks outside the US offer PTT. This message was posted from a K700i

EDGE/WCDMA vs WCDMA only networks:

Thus far my research has uncovered the following -

EDGE triples GPRS capacity while increasing overall packet data performance
EDGE is a simple low cost add-on to existing GSM networks
EDGE does not require new cell planning or frequency planning
EDGE provides a necessary first step for a common GSM/WCDMA network
EDGE is the easiest path from GSM/GPRS to 3G high-speed data services, whether alone, or in combination with WCDMA.

Basically - instead of having to endure the teething problems that comes with deploying a 3G network (cell handovers etc), EDGE delivers speed comparable with current 3G networks, allowing users to experience everything associated 3G with the one exception being video telephony.

"The user will be unaware that the network they are using operates a mix of technologies, operating seamlessly alongside one another and comprising GSM, GPRS, EDGE and WCDMA components." - I quote.

"Even though W-CDMA is capable of bit rates up to 2Mbps, most industry analysts believe that since this would place a prohibitively heavy burden on network resources, speeds of somewhere between 144kbps to maybe 384kbps are more realistic. Perhaps due to the delays associated with 3GSM/W-CDMA rollout and the
uncertainty surrounding the potential demand for 3GSM services, many mobile operators throughout Europe are looking to EDGE to fill the gap." - GSM mobile operators are turning to EDGE to fill 3G gaps (October 2004)

According to the same report - "The GSMA (GSM Association) also believes that many GSM operators will offer 3G services on a combined WCDMA/EDGE network. According to its chief technical officer, Bill Best, one of the main motivations for
deploying EDGE is that it is a way of ‘filling in’ the geographical gaps between islands of W-CDMA coverage."

So... dudes... there is a logical issue with going to the EDGE - and MTN appears to be the network that is leading the way on the technical aspects of deploying the next generation of GSM technologies (note plural). While Vodacom have claimed victory for deploying South Africa's (and not Africa) first 3G network, they may have underestimated the complexity associated with deploying 3G base stations.

MTN appears to have studied the technical issues a tad bit closer and are EDGing to deliver a better user experience than a spotty and frustrating holed 3G network. After all, it's the 3G content we're all buzzing about with video telephony taking much longer to become a fad. We only need to look at MMS to know that this is very true.

38 and probably the oldest ;-) I want to apologise to Tahir, indeed he posted the price albeit not as a answer to my question but he did mention it earlier - sorry Tahir -.Also I have just found out that here in Jeffreysbay we will have a wide area network implemented on wifi ! It uses 'normal' wifi interlinked hotspots with a 32db gain aerial which extends the range to 2km or so line of sight ! The network is going online by the end of the month and is linux based. It operates exactly as the 'big internet' with servers and all that. And yes it is linked to the internet too,but the main advantage is in been able to phone over the network (voip) locally using the right equipment.(N91 comes to mind ) I will keep you posted on how it goes :-) This message was posted from a Nokia 7650

To all my Nokia bruthas... this is why we love you in Africa

Nokia Signs On As Global Sponsor For Live 8 Concerts

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that it has signed on as a global sponsor of the Live 8 concerts on July 2, 2005, organized by Sir Bob Geldof to call on the eight leaders of the world's richest countries to act for debt cancellation, increased aid and trade justice for the world's poorest people at the G8 summit six days later.

John Kennedy of Live 8 said, "Having Nokia as a global sponsor is fantastic as it underscores the importance of communication. Nokia brings additional awareness and visibility to this most important of causes - helping to eradicate poverty."

"We are proud to be a global sponsor of the Live 8 initiative," said Pekka Rantala, Senior Vice President, Multimedia Marketing, Nokia. "Nokia is about connecting people and the Live 8 initiative is a perfect example of what people can accomplish when we work together to achieve a common goal. It's also great to see that the passion people have for music can be channeled for a common good."
