Meaning?

Nobody said its not a good phone. All I'm saying is its not revolutionary(which you keep implying for what I can understand) and it does not deserve to be put on a pedestal. And it STILL lacks features that some of its competitior models have AND it definately wont be good value for money .

It appears X1 will now be released in Q4 2008.

My lousy translation

Perhaps it does not come as a big suprise, but yesterday it was confirmed.
Sony Ericsson's windows mobile Xperia X1 will be launched during the las quarter this year. Earlier Sony Ericsson has just stated "second half of this year".

It is in the material from Sony Ericsson's completed capital market day yesterday in Globen they took the chance to specify the launch date for the longed-for mobile Xperia X1. Earlier only second half of 2008 was mentioned as launch date. Now it will be the later part of the year.

Earlier it have been speculations around the launch date and then Handagon for instance has mentioned mid september as a launch day. That seem to be wrong, but perhaps implies Handagon will be done with their software in good time before the launch.

Also speculations about delays from the original time plan has circulated, but is now denied by the information that Xperia X1 follows the time plan and will be lauched at the end of this year.

My enthusiasm for the X1 is not unique. It seems to be pretty common on the web. Do you disagree?

I'm saying the X1 is obviously greatest and the most anticipated because SE has managed to put forth what appears to be a great total package:
1 ) Pocketable and sexy
2 ) Great hires touchscreen
3 ) iPhone like GUI w/real keyboard
4 ) Large memory capacity - SDHC
5 ) Strong battery
6 ) Play Now media service - Sony's own iTunes!
7 ) Durability - metal body and keys.
8 ) and so much more and so much sexy

It is not just about how many megapixels the camera has if it turns the phone into a huge brick. SE has struck a magical balance between features, build quality and size. If nothing else, the X1 seems to be extremely well thought out. It would be interesting to see if the HTC Raphael falls short like the (great hope) Diamond did. I'm really interested in seeing how long it will be before the X1 is superceded by an even better phone (weeks or months or year?). I don't mind taking extra time to make sure the Xperia branding lives up to it's promise.

It's WM with a custom launcher. The Diamond's Touch 3D UI makes a real change, this certainly doesn't, and it's certainly not "iPhone-like".

Lacking a lot of internal memory, SDHC alone is really nothing to shout about, as even 100€ cheapo phones are SDHC capable.

Not really, but believe what you want.

Completely unproven.

And for the rest: the cam is completely sub-par for that class, it's quite thick, it's still half a year off...but who am I telling that. You wouldn't acknowledge any bad thing anyway.

I believe the X1 software will be much deeper than just a custom launcher. It would be stupid for to sell the Xperia software based on just the launcher panels alone. The launcher (and fish tank) is only what has been shown to the public so far. There is the camera software (which looked pretty slick to me), phone dialer, video recording, media player, contacts, gps, radio, and so forth. The software should completely shield the user from WM. Reaching WM should only be a choice, not something forced upon the user because only made pretty "panels" and nothing else.

Spec-wise I don't see anything to not like about the X1. Any feature that isn't in there probably doesn't fit the targeted dimensions of the X1 (5mp camera, tv out, xenon flash, etc.). IOW something had to go or the phone would be a huge brick...very unsexy

As far as something bad about the X1? The s;uggish response should be fixed. I'm expecting nothing short of iPhone responsiveness.

@WhyBe

Well how about the missing support for video playback and recording of h.264 and only 30fps for 3gp standard then? All the other things you seem to think will appear no one will know for sure until it's released, but somehow i doubt your right as otherwise the firmware will be extremely bloated with all that running on top of WM6.1 won't it?

There's no reason for all of that software to run at the same time. I don't know about the H.264 video support...doesn't it have to do with a licensing issue or something like that? I asked this question a few pages back.

Here is a Microsoft guy speaking about the X1.

Here's another video of SE explaining the X1 GUI themselves (listen carefully)

Have you ever used a WM phone in your life?
I ask you this because its plain common sense that if SE were to change the lower level system to make it touch based either:
1. They'd have to pay microsoft to re-write the entire SDK
2. They'd need to make an entirely new UI based on Windows CE 5.0

Yes they will have a a few more apps that are finger friendly, there are several other apps already finger friendly nothing new in that(you'd know that if you knew anything about WM)

Yes theres nothing you dont like about the X1, maybe because you're coming from something lower end, maybe. Do you ever read any whitepapers or any technical based documents before making statements online? I think not. The MSM 7200A/7200/7201/7201A all support USB Host as well as Video out as seen on the Imate 9502, there is no additional hardware component required, its all in the processor, the respectve bus(as well as tiny changes to the USB port to allow it to act as host as well as PAL)etc.. have to be implememnted on the chipset, as well as few changes to the software. So in short its possible, its been done, they've just not got down to doing it because a new phone will be released in a few months with it on, and certain members on this forum will jump for joy as its a new revolution started by SE .

I dont think a 5Mpx cam is the answer, a cam iwth a better sensor and few pixels would do too, the LG KS20 2Mpx is comparable to the K750i cam or even better, which those crappy X1 pics dont reveal, did you see the full 3Mpx pic poste by bengalboy? ANyway lets not get into that again we'll wait till the final unit is out.

BTW I'm not against the X1, it might be my next phone, but I cant stand it when people put certain products on pedestals when they dont really deserve to be there.

Regards,

Akshay
