To be honest, it does sound dodgy, but checking the imei on any phone is usually a good idea. A better idea, if you're shopping for a good second-hand phone, is to check out places like bidorbuy and ebay, and to only buy from trusted sellers.

The Samsung U100 surpassed the X820, and is a whole whopping 1mm thinner at 5.9mm...

EDIT: SA doesn't suffer from hurricanes; massive thunderstorms in some inland parts and various degrees of gale force winds along the coast at times, but nothing like Ike etc.
