Heh, Apple have, their iPhone 4 still has the ever present antenna issue.

Well, Jobbs found a solution. A free ugly bumper for everyone!

They had to go for a dedicated press conference where Jobbs made a fool out of himself claiming that all phones have those weak spots on them!! And accused the media to exaggerate the thing and make a big fuss out of it..
At the end he just needed that white beard and red hat as he announced: "Let it be. Free bumpers for everyone"

And that issue did affect their sales!
But the point here, hardware flaws are usually detected as soon as the product is released.. As in the iPhone 4's case..
If the N8 had such a major issue, it would have been immediately pointed out!

Anyway im not a firmware expert but i think its slightly more complex than only 3 firmware variations. Looking at mine, i have listed a software version, then a sub custom software version. Im sure the major firmware is pretty much the same across the board, but the custom version will not be, not to mention operator branded firmware versions.

Id also guess the majority of customers who've got branded N8 phones are the ones with issues. Like i said i never have such issues, but then i always buy unbranded.

I don't have an idea how Nokia customize their firmwares and how many departments depending on regions do they have.. But most probably it should be more than four..

But usually it's those minor customizations that causes the trouble.. And yes, mostly on those branded phones!
Branding means there should be custom ROMs involved.. And here come the problems..

I remember back in 2005 with my K750i there were all sorts of problems here in the UK with the phone, yet they were all with O2 branded phones.

Network branding also tends to slow a phone down

No if i remember right he now has a X10 mini, or mini pro.

@ SLY21 - ive not used a Tomtom with my phone, since i dont need to, but signal strength of the N8 is as always top notch. Nokia phones never struggle with signal strength since its Nokia's first priority when designing phones.

@etaab actually mate the problem with the k750i wasnt just with the o2 branded versions. I was managing cpw in bolton when the k750i first came out and even the stock versions had bluetooth issues, back cover problems to name but a few
