@Any one else: If anyone else has handled the phone, are the purported screen brightness issues (i.e. complaints of it being dim even on max brightness) really as bad as they make it sound? Could this be a manufacturing inconsistency between certain batches/color models? I'm almost thinking of sitting and waiting for the 2nd batch of production to see if it might improve if it is indeed an issue. Thoughts?

According to Sidneylopsides the screen brightness is good.

Hmm, seeing some odd conflicting views on the screen brightness.
The ones I had with me on Sunday were plenty bright enough, as Pocketnow agrees, yet other sources say it's dull. I wonder if there is something causing that, maybe different software, or even a bug?

But in another thread he also says

The screen has auto brightness on all the time, and it ca be a bit agressive indoors, right now with the lights off it's quite dull, but easy to use. I can see why thay've done it (It'll save power too) but it would be nice to have the option to turn it off.

I guess there is nothing wrong with the screen, but due to the auto brightness the screen mey appear either as bright or dull depending on the lighing conditions under which it is used.

I was in Carphone store today it had a stand dedicated to Xperia phones. It had a working Play model which I took photo of and a silver Arc plus surprisingly a working Neo. Anyway all looked nice except Neo felt cheap and too light.

After having my own for a day or so, I can make more sense of the screen issues.

Auto is always on, and during the day it's nice and bright and looks pretty good, but in a dark environment it gets a lot darker, and can seem quite dull. I've not had a situation where it's been too dim to see or anything, it's just noticeable indoors. It does seem to help the battery life though, on mine the cell standby etc uses more power than the screen, on the X10 it was the other way around.

Overall though, I'm very happy with it! I keep mentioning this, but the speakers are excellent! The sound in general is very good, but the speakers are great for a phone.
I've bought a couple of games, they are awesome. Slightly disappointed at the control layout on Modern Combat, but that's not the phone's fault, Gameloft made a strange decision there.

Thanks, that would be it 30K in PHP - definitely the high end of the SE phone price spectrum. I've already had 2 people suggest I get the Play instead of the Neo but am hesitant. The emphasis on games might have made browsing& internet experience in general less pleasant. Camera is definitely inferior to the Neo/Arc too.

Thanks Bono, great shot. The Play definitely looks classy & finely made. Hope the controls stand up to heavy game play though.

Nice to know that the sound is great, that's one of the things I liked about my PSP v1. Whats the music player like? Does it still have the equalizer controls that's standard on Walkman phones?

I am unable to use the web browser while talking on the phone. (No data connection available while on voice call)

Anyone else with the same problem?

That's due to a GPRS/EDGE connection, all phones do that, you are only able to surf the web and be on a phone call when in 3G/HSDPA.
