Only Android M (that is 6.0 and up) will support native 4K resolution.

So unless GSM arena had Z5 Premium running Android M, we do not know if UI will run at native 4K resolution.

pretty sure its confirmed scaling in place, no 4K UI. Any new 4k phones that come out next year will probably use the same solution.

This is my conversation via Facebook inbox with official Sony Mobile facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/sonymobile ):

ME: Hello, would you be so kind to tell me is Xperia Z5 Premium going to have native 4K support for user interface (UI) or will 4K resolution be used only for photos and videos?
I have heard that UI will be displayed at native 1080p and 4K resolution would be available only for specific content.
Would I be able to choose the option for 4K resolution to be constant no matter the screen content?
Kind regards

SM: Hi xx. The display on the Z5 Premium is 5.5'' 4K UHD (3840x2160), 806 PPI, Triluminos display for mobile. Only 4K content would be displayed in this standard on the handset. - Hayley

that is the most generic reply I have heard ever, the new Album app and video app are the only ones that works in native 4K, and most likely Camera too.

Sony made a big deal about the upscaling engine in their press conference, they will use the 4K for non-4K content and it will be upscaled.

The UI being upscaled we'll have to wait and see, they may consider the pay off against the processing(battery) usage not worth it, look at the way the X-Reality Engine is only turned on in album and video apps NOT UI or device wide as an example.

Similarly, I wouldn't expect 3rd party apps to be upscaled (I use a 3rd party launcher but may consider dropping back to Xperia Home if it is supremely nice).

Personally, I'm growing frustrated with my 3rd party video players (I use VLC and mobo) being a bit flakey. VLC is jittery recently and mobo has been a pain recently too. If Sony's video app has a few key features (needs codecs and better file browser) updated I will happily switch and save myself the bother of taking space with third party apps.

I use MX Video player, and would love to have the upscaling...

but really, upscaling is only for 2K content ? I thought it will be awesome to have 480p, 720p contents to save space and still be able to see high quality content !!, but I guess no...

Who/where said upscaling is for 2K content only?

The interesting thing about that image from the eprice website is that it says 2K to 4K in the title but doesn't say anything about it being limited to 2K to 4K.

huge improvement over the previous Z lineup, their selective image sharpening works well in most shots and cleaned up most the artifacts from previous algorithm. However, always feels like Sony is trying to push the camera too far with the tiny sensor they got. When looking at those photos in full res they don't don't look like they are meant to be for 23MP. Should be been a 18MP with the same sensor, without going full res and viewing the photos on a 1080p screen here they are far closer to the competitors than ever. Low light results are not surprising, OIS and F1.9 and F1.8 lens should definitely give G4 and Note 5 the advantage here. Video wise its the champ.
