While out and about today, I stopped at a BP service station and noticed a sign advertising a BP / AA Rewards card competition. One of the prizes is a 'Sony Ericsson Walkman Phone' and pictured is a W900i.

This left me perplexed. Did BP source these W900i's from nz or from an importer? What does VFNZ think of that? I'm sure that this could become a sticky situation for BP unless the W900 picture was just a sample photo and if so, what phone are they really giving away?

Maybe I over-analyse but this situation has me intrigued...

Hey Carkitter, you know anything abotu putting carkits into trucks? have a mate thats looking to get an HCB 700 installed into his truck. If not can you reccomend anyone?

So are nz going to release phones with MSPD alongside phones with Memory Stick Micro (M2) and require stores to stock both types of media? I very much doubt it.

Thats upto the stores, remember the media isn't directly sold by its just the type the phone uses. Now if the store is SMART they'll contact Sony (remember different company ) and setup an account and look at providing the media.

It's no wonder the sony stores have to be doing so well when the people selling them don't really look past the phones and directly sold accessories by the phone manufacturer. They (and trademe ) have to be making a killing on MSPD

K610i has MP3, M2 plus the all important (to Vodafone) 3G features. Perhaps it would be a better choice for our tiny market.

That'll be upto voda I guess, they seem to be too 3g happy right now. I guess alot of handsets will get left by the wayside. Meh! mind you not surprising when you look at the rebates voda gives its dealers. (They also get incentives I believe to sell more 3g than 2g)

Will SonyNZ or NZ release the 4GB and 8GB MSPD cards? I hope so. It's hard to find even the 1 or 2Gig cards at the moment.

SE? no. They don't have anything to do with memory card releases. Sony, should do, they usually bring all their memory products out here. The New Market sony store is pretty onto it.

Sorry if I sound overly cynical, but it frustrates me immensly how little choice we get here in NZ.

Totally agree with you!

As for the promotions, it'd be silly to think that SENZ didn't have w900's So they might give some away as promo prizes, that or they have used parallel ones. VFNZ won't really care at all since its more money for them for whoever gets the phone. (Doesn't the TV ad say a sony phone? just rofl, the only sony phone was the CMD j70 out here and i'd be pissed if i won that )

So would I.

Hardly surprising though that BP's ad agency doesn't know the finer details of products.

My point about VF is that they don't like non-official phones being connected to thier network so W900 would be frowned on. Perhaps had a supply deal with BP prior to VF dumping the W900 but noone informed the BP ad people of the latest developments.

If I won a W900 from BP, who would be responisble for ensuring it is able to be connected in NZ?

As for Carkit installation into a truck, yeah I've done a few.

Most trucks and some heavy duty 4WD's have a 24 Volt electrical system so your friend will need a stepdown transformer to supply 12V to the Carkit.

Some more info is needed to determine the best system for the truck:

Make, model
Size (tonnage)
Distance / Region travelled per trip

A truck such as a Isuzu Delta is pretty basic - no radio mute or pre-wiring for instance whereas the latest Vovlo Roadtrains are pretty sophisticated with pre-wiring for power and speaker interface.

While cellphone reception is pretty good these days, it still varies through hilly and remote terrain, so an external antenna may be needed if used outside urban areas. Again, a Delta could use the standard car antenna but a tractor unit would be better off with either a 'invisible' antenna or a heavy duty, boosted, roof mounted, antenna.

Alternatively, if the driver is in-and-out of the truck all the time, perhaps an Akono HBH-300 headset would suit better. It has excellent standby and talktime and a car charger suppied in the box.

And the news for Telecom just keeps getting worse and worse...
Nokia to stop making CDMA phones

Of the 25 CDMA phones and PDA's listed in this months MyMobile magazine, 10 were Nokia's. That's 40% of thier lineup Telecom are going to have to replace as they gradually drop out of production.

However, a bigger problem is looming... Telecom have set out to attract the Business customer most of whom are supplied with Nokia's, all of whom have tried Hyundai's, Samsung's, Sanyo's etc and gone back to thier trusty Nokia's.
Not only that, have you tried a non-nokia genuine carkit recently if you can find one that is?

Take away the Nokia's and Telecom has only 2 mobiles and 2 PDA's with Bluetooth for business users.

Telecom are f**ked withotu nokia, sure samsung might be delivering some good phones but to be honest most lemming nokia users only want to stay with nokia.

Sadly nokia's were the best brand phones for telescum.. They'll be WCDMA in no time

Quite right.

I guess Telecom will have to look to Motorola to save it's a$$. I understand Motorola are big on CDMA in the US of A, however with the amount of free advertising Moto (and Nokia) are getting from VodafoneNZ of late, I'm sure there's probably some sort of exclusivity deal going on.

There are no Moto's on CDMA listed in the June MyMobile Magazine.

Back on topic...

Now only one official phone left in enzed. Last month MM magazine listed 4 SE's, today we're left with just the Z520i.

Congratulations Parallel Imported Ltd and the Labour Govt whose legislation brought them into existance, you've almost killed off the best mobile brand in New Zealand.
