The Z4 is pretty much a stop gap for the Japanese market as their carriers demand new phones on short cycles. If it comes out for the rest of the world, what is the big deal? Can this Z4 not compete with the S6 and HTC? I think comparison tests will soon show you that it does rather well. It may look very similar to the Z3 but it is a decent update. It looks better than the S6 and has an SD card slot. The bezel argument is rubbish, bezels are similar to that of the S6 so that's not really valid. It's very slim yet retains its waterproofing. Yes, the Exynos will probably make the S6 perform better but the Z4 isn't as bad as a lot of people think. Some people were expecting too much, had it been a new design then everyone would've been happy. Sony will address the design in the next flagship. The Z4 is excellent, look at it from a neutral perspective and you'll see what I mean. I'm certain the video comparisons with the Z3, S6 and HTC will prove me right.
Regarding the leaks, I've seen models of concept ideas like the Y and tube designs, shapes more than anything. It's important to consider the engineering aspect of using such ideas so making a single piece tube design is probably not feasible. To fix such a phone would be a nightmare. The Y idea is something easy to incorporate. The phone will need to be durable, fixable etc. Other stuff that we don't consider is the cost of producing such phones so taking the tube as an example, how would you 'slide' a screen and internals into a glass tube and how much would it cost? What about the buttons on the side, would you cut holes in the glass to put a power button on? These type of things would make the phone too fragile.

There's no way that Z4 announced in Japan is gonna be the official flagship for the year. Just simply not enough fan fare for their top of the line device. Bad naming on their part though as it should be a Z3 variant, I think.
Perhaps they are moving away from the Z naming? Looking forward to IFA ...

And this is purely a stopgap product that isn't intended be treated like a Flagship
For the Z3 neo/Z4 part- the naming schemes in japan are always different and according to wishes of carriers there.
For international model we might still see Z3 neo name.

For me it also seemed like Sony is trying to catch up in the naming game with Apple and Samsung like litoni said. So unless they really don't care about it, I don't see a new naming scheme happening.

Z4 has better design, will surely have batter battery life, microSD slot support, water and dust resistance capabilities. Only now with S6 samsung able to make a phone that doesn't look or feel cheap but they sacrifice lots of important features for that. But Sony is able to make a phone with almost no compromise (only smaller battery size) than its predecessors . I'll say good job Sony.

I'm happy that Z4 is only for Japan. Z4 front looking better only because of the speakers, back is same, sides worse! It looks thicker than Z3. I don't like the corners and the bottom looks horrible...
