There are no leftover Z panels. That makes no sense, thats not how modern supply chains work. Storing millions of panels is a lot of wasted money

Now Sony may have ordered the same type of panels that were used on the Z. But nobody is storing leftover panels

I dont think there will be a real answer to this. When Z first came out, the argument was that the JDI display was crap and the Sharp panel was the best one, but then XDA did a survey and it turned out both panels were good and bad

Only way to be sure is to try out your unit in the store first.

it is a feature of the Z1.. http://www.sonymobile.com/au/[....]es/xperia-z1/features/#display

All other manufacturers use this feature too but they don't call it with specialname like Sony does, OptiContrast.

That's not always possible. I went to my local Phones4u store yesterday, in which I was seriously considering buying the Z1. When I asked the Assistant if I could inspect the unit before parting with my cash, she told me they are not allowed to open the packaging as once been opened they are unable to resell it.

This is a funny walkthrough.. I'm not sure who the guy is answering the questions but he COMPLETELY disregards the viewing angle question (around 3:20ish). If he is a Sony employee, that's pretty bad. They should OWN up to it on the Z and show that is has improved on the Z1 or something. To ignore it and say that there are no viewing angle problem is a bit absurd. Even worse is to say it's exactly what you want on a smartphone.. tsk tsk whoever that guy is..

i don't even care about viewing angles, but plenty of people do. to answer a question like that just makes it very suspicious.. i really hope that guy is not speaking for Sony..

@monkeypantz - yes.

@king-james - OptiContrast is indeed Sony's brand. It works by using a special resin in the glass panel to eliminate glare and increase contrast & color. They've combined it with sensor-on-lens tech, which eliminates the space between the touch sensor layer and the glass. Surely, as a self proclaimed Sony lover, you don't make such conclusive statements without providing some evidence? Where does samsung do it? where does Apple, HTC, LG, do it? I don't care if they don't have a brand name for it, but how do you know they do the same thing?

I am wondering.

Has Sony it's own factories in China or are they outsourcing to foxconn?

With Foxconn busy on the iphone models, could it then impact Sony and we get less quality and consistency on the Sony factory process?

This may be where Fujitsu flagship will have an edge, the screens are produced by their JV with Toshiba in Japan and the assembly is in Japan. I am not naive on their "made in Japan" branding, snapgragon 800 is built in Taiwan I think, but this mean that overall they may have a better control in particular if Sony outources and has to fight with apple for ressources at the same time.

I think the Z1 is a fine piece of hardware. I am worried about docomo updates release speed though.
The fujitsu rumor is also tempting with 5.2" screen, 64gb, fingerprint reader, waterproof and full seg TV. The speaker on the current fujitsu does not seem impressive. I will wait for it and compare with z1 before buying.

moogoo here for you the definition of OptiContrast. It has nothing to do with contrast and colours...

@king-james.. that's not the full picture my friend..

"OptiContrast™ Panel technology boosts the contrast and brightness. By boosting contrast and brightness, the viewing experience is enhanced."

Source

and

"OptiContrast Panels have a special resin layer which absorbs any diffused light delivered from the backlight. What you see is high contrast and natural colours on screen – bringing out detail in the darkest movie scenes – and a real sense of depth.

This special resin layer inside OptiContrast Panels also absorbs ambient light in the room. When watching TV, it reduces glare from light sources such as lamps or sunlight"

moogoo okay, then I'm sorry, but for me it's all marketing...

BTW this guy in this video has no clue about the phone. He don't know what to say...

@king-james .. i'm sure there is marketing involved, no doubt. But it does help! I've compared the opticontrast screen with a galaxy S3/S4 screen (with both screens off) and you can definitely notice more glare on the S3/S4.

and yes.. that dude is clueless.
