My point is: people are talking for years now about SE, about how they need to hurry up or otherwise loose customers, I just don't believe that. Just a small fraction of the customers is loyal to a brand, all the others will switch easily. Therefore, SE might loose some customers if they don't come up with a new smartphone, but other customers will come back for the phones they actually bring out.

I think it will require a combination of both factors. However, 'when they are ready' is dependent on how they see the P1i in the market. I think its a good but by no means a top of the range solution, it depends what they think of that and if they agree are they willing to work on a much better, new top of the range solution, or just focus on the mid and lower ranges (AGAIN). I hope they go for something new and great for a change. I think a time will come when the same mid range walkman phone with a different look and same specs wont sell anymore. I hope they decide to aim at the upper market before that happens, because many are waiting and hoping for something groundbreaking, and the longer it takes, the more we will expect from them, and if they deliver nothing, sooner or later (this could be long term) the brand will lose its appeal. Theres no point in name and good build quality if specs are a few years outdated. Even their latest offerings are not anything special. The W960i is better than the P1i (in terms of specs and UI) but there is still alot to be desired. The same with the 3 new walkman phones released at the end of 2007. They are mid range solutions with added HSDPA. Thats okay for some, but will not do much to beat the competition because as I said, when the customer sees other brands offering new and interesting features, there wont be anything to keep them with SE. I do not think this year will be like most years. It will be more deicisive as it is the advent of many new revolutions to the industry- mobile TV, great touch interfaces, much better cameras, much better memory, much better gaming (PS phone?), much better internet capabilites (Opera 9 is being released this year). So there is absolutely nothing to say that this year should adhere to old patterns. Lets see how the story unfolds

You repeat this "there's no P5" but for what? It's something you've made up.
In one thing you're right - they announce it when it's ready.
And I don't think that it's so simple to loose customers. Look at the iPhone or Nokia - often people buy things no matter what they bring.

Yes, while that something is new. But once its the same thing as the previous years, people will get wise to the fact that it isnt really an upgrade at all from one phone to another.

Sony Ericsson don't make the bulk of their money from smartphones, they make it from volume phones and the walkman brand of phones. In that sector there is little brand loyalty, but in the smartphone sector there is somewhat more loyalty.
If

aren't working on a new smartphone, then they may as well get out of this sector all together, however that's not a wise option either. Most large companies will have a "flagship" offering to demonstrate their leading edge technology, even if this doesn't sell in large quantities. It's expected of them.
With that in mind let's look at the current flagship phone, the P1i. It's an updated version of the M600i and by

's admission, the replacement for the P990i, however technology wise it's not all that different from the phone(s) it replaces.
Sure the memory has been increased and the screen is better quality but it doesn't significantly improve on the original design of the P990i, which was announced back towards the end of 2005 but never shipped until Sep/Oct of 2006.
Therefore the flagship phone is crying out for an update and while the P1i is a solid smartphone, it's not what most people expected.
Add to this the recent hype over prototype P5i units, the fact there are JPGs floating around with EXIM data claiming the photo was from a P5i and you have a compelling argument for a new flagship smartphone.
The only question is when are Sony Ericsson going to release it?
For that I'd have to speculate:
(a) When the technology is ready
(b) When the sales of the P1i are flat/declining
It would seem that 2008 is a good year for a really good flagship smartphone but only time will tell. I guess that's why we all spend so long trawling the forums

Over the last few days I've read all
129 pages of this topic. And I've mixed feelings about what I think - some of the designs are absolutely fantastic, especially this one by sealover:
All I know is that I'm really looking forward to a new P-series phone!

Something I have made up, you mean like the name P5i or P3i? Or the pictures that are supposed to be of the P5i? I think you need a reality check.
Show me any documentation that says the next P series phone out will be called the P5i. Or even a P3i. Show me a real picture of that phone, not some phone a person on this board that has reasonable Photoshop skills has put together. Bottom line is you can't.
All I am stating is the information I have is there is no P3i or P5i and that comes from Co-workers who are in the know.

Of course,
the names are made up,
as well as the look which is photoshopped,
You're right
But I know it exists, nothing else can be stated,
And yes, this topic is only a discussion,
without any real facts
