What do you mean old? Was there a Sony phone equipped with such a solution?
Nope but the technology was so long. Thailand did it long ago. Samsung too. Its just integrating a optical protrusion camera into a phone .
Samsung did this, but quality wasn't perfect. A real *zoom* is good.

This is weird to me.
Xperia has DSEE Ultimate, while headphones (announced months later) use DSEE Extreme.
Isnt Extreme lower tier than Ultimate?

So far Xperias are only Sony devices to use DSEE Ultimate, not even Walkmans have it. But DSEE does very little, it's some sort of glue compressor VST that smooths out compressed disjointed signal and adds sparkle on the top end to spread the sound stage. It does not retrieve lost frequencies and harmonics due to compression, it does not fix signal distortion and more importantly if the mix is bad and muddy it can't brighten it up and that's the first thing many think off when they are presented with some improvement audio signal processing technology.
Edit: Only time I've had DSEE do something I can hear is on XZ2 hooked to that crappy USB-C DAC you get in the box, that thing is a disaster and should be thrown away anyway. That's the only case where I can hear the difference and that's not even on all the songs I have locally stored.

Music in my car sounds definitely better with Xperia 1ii than with Xperia 1.

Despite Sony advertised DSEE HX as exclusive for earphones, it also works for speakers.
It is pretty easy to see difference when you turn it on.
So, how can u use Ultimate if your 🎧 has only the Extreme?
