I'm a bit of a radio freak, so much so that i haven't watched tv per se since 2004. I'd love to see an AM inclusion in phones, mostly because of the diversity of stations broadcasting on AM. In S.Africa we've few local broadcasters on AM, so i indulge myself heavily in foreign broadcasters. This message was posted from a Nokia

What about SW? You get all kinds of interesting stations on there, plus of course things like the BBC World Service.

Mind you, putting SW radios into mobile phones would be a little too specialist imho

for those interested, here is the credit card radio I spoke of earlier. still in excellent condition and working perfectly. I'm sure it must be a collectors piece. anyway, I'm still curious that if they could put AM in this 12 years ago surely size isn't an issue for putting AM into phones today?

yeah I spotted that when looking to get some info about it earlier, and also this which shows all the currently available styles

so its nice to see that its still available after all this time but really thats a bit off topic and people seem to be skirting the real issue here now.

As I said, I'm no expert so I'm keen to have my question answered

@masseur, That IS slim ...Hmm....then the argument of size being a possible issue in incorporating AM capability into a cellphone goes out of the window....

Well not so off topic anyway masseur at least it shows that technology can manufacturer small(ish) AM radio's so maybe if phones were to include them they would need to a little thicker to fit it all in.

Personally though, if you want a radio then please go and buy a radio, BUT if you would like a phone then purchase a phone and whatever extra's it may include then just be happy with it After all a phone is designed intentionally for the main purpose of emergency calls to alert yourself/others of danger.

oooh, I really dislike that philosophy. So many people said exactly that when cameras started appearing in phones but I really like convergent technology, especially if I have to carry less around with me, and as the K750/W800 cameras, music ability etc now prove, each feature doesn't have to be anything less than very good or excellent.

the more I can fit into a single device the happier I am, its been happening since music centres appeared in the 70's and for me its the way forward

I understand what your saying over there but you have a radio in the K750i yet people moan because it has only got FM not AM as well. I also would like to carry only the one device to suit my every need but thats why I own many laptops one with built in GPRS, its perfect - not so small as a phone etc. but only an 8" screen.

But now even I am getting way off topic, lets just wait and see what the next generation of phones are like, because we all know that smart phones and camera phones are leading the way now, so maybe AM radio will just pass away silently (not if Esato has anything to do with it though by the looks of things ) and move onto streaming radio through GPRS connections etc.
