@ 619: Nokia's had the 9210 on the market before the T68. And btw, T68 was first released without MMS (though it was launched as supporting MMS), i.e. with a cosmetic color-screen, since you can't really make use of it apart from putting background pics. Note that 9210 has a web browser, hence the color screen can be used meaningfully.

@ jb, Japan and Europe are two very different arenas.

Don't forget that in Japan, operators hold the manufacturers. They know exactly what they want and order it from phone vendors. I-mode, since you raise it, is not much in itself, technologically speaking (it's very very similar to GSM data 9.6kbits per second), but tons of services are available! Dream on to get this in Europe... European operators still havent understood that a technology itself doesn't sell. Services sell. And they still havent understood that they just provide a carrier, and should open it to different and innovative service providers.

Now also, European operators blame Nokia because a technology can't sell as long as there is no Nokia phone supporting it. That makes me laugh a lot. These operators do not even have the technology ready before the phones are out!!! For instance they've blamed the lack of MMS handsets or GPRS handsets, while they didn't even provide MMS or GPRS as they were not even ready for it. C'mon!! They should take their own responsibilities and stop blaming others for their own fault.
The point is that Nokia has known how to use a technology. See e.g. picture messaging, ringtone download etc, via SMS! Operators are making a lot of money with this (Cingular for instance earns more with this than with normal phone calls!). And this has been copied through the EMS that others are now happily supporting. See also the success of Club Nokia. Again, operators are not happy with it. But hey, they don't even offer half of it...
