The W550 has an identical camera as the V800/Z800. I was able to take very decent pics with it. Look at this thread:

You sometimes need a steady hand or have to adjust exposure. But this way I even managed to catch a dolphin in the middle of a jump.

Actually I dont think the picturequality is the issue, but our expectations is. Since the release of K750 we have been spoiled with great pictures, some arent even satisfied with this anymore. Since then our expectations from mobilecams have skyrocketet, and I think that if youve tested this cam before the K750 were released when we were used to VGA cams, you would not have been equally dissapointed.
I also think, that with a litle more time getting used to the cam, you will be able to get better pictures. Use the manual settings possible, make sure there are plenty of light as with all cams (especially mobilecams), use fine mode, keep a very steady hand.
Take some time and take lots and lots of pictures to learn where it performs well and where it doesnt.

actually i have only 3 modes:
1280x1024 which offers NO ZOOM
640x480 which offers 2x zoom
and 160x120 with 4x zoom
when i first read the specs on the se site about the cam having 4x zoom i assumed (and any person would too) that i can get 4x in ANY mode whether its 1280 or 160. (SIGH)
