i know this might shock some ppl by shouting about this solution but it came to me the other day.... how about?
SIMPLY NOT GIVING UR PHONE TO PEOPLE TO LOOK THROUGH OR LEAVING UR PHONE SOMEWHERE SOMEONE CAN LOOK AT ITS MENUS AND ITEMS?
it works for me so might jus work on other phones....

yeah thats true, but I guess you don't need to be a rocket scientist to unlock the keypad on most
phones whereas nokias can be locked by a security code much like that on the P series

A pin code keypad lock is a great idea. I used it on Nokias when I had them.
I have to leave my phone lying around at work sometimes, and anybody can pick it up and make calls or look through your text messages.
It would be a useful feature.

I agree, it would be a great feature. I think to make it better, it should be any number of digits, but it will not lock your phone permanently if entered wrong, like in the P-series i believe?
edit: In theory would it be possible to implement this in a future firmware?

Todays mobile phones are not just phones.
They
are mass storage devices and even more than that. They can take high quality pictures, record/play high quality videos, carry and show sensitive corporate files and much more.
I belive you don't have anything you want to protect in your house, because the way you think, the only right place to have such things is in a valve in the bank, right?
So no locks needed for the house then...
A feature locking/encrypting dirs would be nice to have in
phones. It should be in every serious corporate phone, but as phones have evolved also in regular phones.
