I have to agree with tot-shots; not all of us like the K700i. I am sick of mine and have retired it somewhere in my home. Have gone back to using my ancient (!) CMD-J70. Now that's a good fone!
I had no problems with the joystick or menu on the K700i. But I could not continue with those bugs. You name it, I had it (the 3-second delay, occasional crashes, white screen before freezing, heating up like something had shorted inside, missed calls because the phone did not always ring, etc, etc.).
Updated the firmware 3 times (last one was R2AY004). Always worked for a short time after then back to the SOS. Reported to SE - I do not know why I bothered.
Somebody once told me that the updates (at SE service centres in Europe) did not overwrite the original software which was probably corrupted and that I should try Davinci.
Will give it one more try. If that does not work, no more SE phones for me.
I speak from experience. I truly like the design of the SE phones but I have lost all confidence in their products.

Nothing fancy looking like the K700. In fact, if you compare looks, it is best to keep in your pocket! It is a Sony model (I think from back before they joined up with Ericsson).
On reliability, it beats my K700 hands down.

But reading your first post tot, if you're happy with other manufacturers and any quirks they may have (since its been shown

) then maybe its best just to not look at an
one at all. (I love my
's personally but if you're going to be extremely dissapointed and put off before you buy one, then isn't that just setting yourself up for a fall?)
The only real suggestion I can give you is go into a mobile fone store and act like an interested customer and try the phones you're being offered/want first then see wether or not they're upto the level you are expecting.
On the flip side, in wanting a phone, what are the features you're wanting. Its kinda easy to dismiss phones on bugs, but what features are you looking for in a new phone? (EG must be a smart phone, 3g, camera quality, music player, any particular media formats mp3, ra, avi, etc?)
Personally, I like the W800, as a music phone sure it could do with some improvements in the media player but the sound is very nice and I don't mind the orange. (I hate the cream colour on it though lol) But as far as a phone goes its been fine, the joystick is usable, the screen looks wonderful and is very crisp. Haven't seen a crash, corrupt file, or anything go wrong with it.

Still I believe the joystick IS a weakness, but the problem can be avoided by learning how to be kind to the joy. Ideally it would be nice if it wasn't so sensitive, but tbh it's such a trivial issue in comparison to the phones over all usefullness. And it's not just an SE problem.
Joystick problems are common to all makes of mobile phone that use joysticks rather than d-pads. I did a quick search of google and found a heap of Nokia users disgruntled about the useability of Nokia joysticks.
For example, these reports are from user reviews - these are problems before the Joystick has even been used much:
9300: too sensitive to use in some screens
6820: "The 6820's joystick menu control has little joy about it! It looks awful, like a little plastic wart, and feels lumpy to use. "
6020: "The joystick is not very good as it is hard to press it compared to the se joysticks"
6600: "Poor joystick"
7260: "Joystick is a problem to use.U end up somewhere if you press the joystick by mistake in a direction u dont intend to.Better go for the Sony Ericsson K700i rather than this one."
From what I can tell, and my own experience, SE joysticks are easier to use than Nokia. Maybe Nokia joysticks ARE stronger, but overall useability is important too. I haven't even looked at other makes of phone.
Personally, If I had an SE (or any make for that matter) with a crap joystick I'd take the phone back for a replacement before telling all and sundry that ALL SE phones have joystick problems.

) to phone joysticks, by design they'll collect crap and require the odd cleaning now and again. (User circumstances may effect how much 'odd cleaning now and then' means)
I hate d pads for gaming though
