The fact that software for UIQ3 won't be backwards-compatible is an issue, I agree -- but making it non-crackable is a good thing, isn't it? It means the software developers will get the rewards they deserve, and might even lead to more outfits making software for the P990 as a result.... *They're* the ones who'll benefit -- but I can't see it making any difference to SE whichever way (so why would SE "smile"
, as you put it?).

You seem not to realise the fact that SE will have to give it a 'push-start' to get it 'going'. Keep in mind this is the very first phone on a completely new platform. Usually a computer and the software which makes it run, go/sell 'hand in hand'.No one will buy a expensive device for which there isn't software and no big company will develop software for a phone which is not selling. After all they want their development money back + (profits). You see that is a 'cath22' situation. The companies are prepared for such a case financially. They go into non lucrative contracts with software developing companies, basically taking most of the risk over untill the units 'support' them self. Nokia, the market leader, has done the same. Even the mighty Microsoft use to write programs for its os back in the yearly 80s till got big enough to attract 3d party developers. You got the point ? Greetings from South Africa. Mario.

Um thats part of the why we're having to wait for the phone, as per their original press release its to give developers time to move their software to the phone.
This effects all new symbian phones though, be it nokia, moto, or

or anyone else who made earlier symbian phones.
Lets wait till the phones out before we try to put out its fire eh?

Even the N80 is not backwards compatible. SE is probably doing the right thing with the P990 and what's really causing the problem is Symbian 9.1 not uiq3. SE would've been better off if they'd made a version of the P990 using uiq2.1. BTW the lenovo isn't going to kill anything.

Mario, you really don't want to give anyone, or anything a break

??
Catch 22? No company will write software for a new OS or a small user base? Yeah, I've seen that before: I use a Mac, been a Mac user for all I care to remember!
Pundits and so-called experts always predict the demise of Apple and the Mac platform whenever it comes out with something new and out of the ordinary. After all these years, and all the HW, SW and major OS transitions we've been through, we have a modern OS and a healthy SW base with thousands of titles.

Nobody is talking about macs which I love very much. And where did you read that the symbian 9.1 is not compatible with early versions ? ? ? There is not such problem buddy. Let's not confuse our self. The only problematic interface is the difference in graphic screen resolution. Nokia managed to bypass that by making the screen resolution double in both x and y. When a 'old' program is started the os sees 4 neighbouring pixels as 1 otherwise it works at hires. Very clever indeed. There are a few programs even in s60 which are not fully compatible but most are not only backwards but some even forwards compatible. In other words a program written for a N70 has a fair chance of running on my old 7650 if it does not access the memory card and is small enough. This is one of the strengts of the S60 OS ! Greetings from South Africa. Mario.

Eldar said in his N80 preview that regular software wouldn't work on it and programs had to be recompiled and then signed by symbian, its because of symbian 9.1

You may want to ring nokia then Mario, because any phone based on symbian 9.1 be it s60 or UIQ will have to have their programs rewritten. Also confirmed over at my-symbian.com.
So

is giving developers time to get their programs over to the new phone, afaik thats a win:win situation, but then for a fair amount of people, what the phone comes with, out of the box will probably be fine too.

@mario.....just curious......have you ever used phones other than the 7650 or do you raise arguments for the heck of it based on your obsession with a manufacturer?? while thes nothing wrong with favouring a brand....which is what this site is all about..maybe you should give it a thought!
