Works for orange, 02, virgin, etc. Does not work for 3 Network...You gotta call Tmobile & Vodafone to find out if you'll get charged.. I do on Voda :s
I was sent that number by someone haven't bothered with it tho,
I use a Mobile world sim to dial abroad

Yeah unfortunately, pay and go O2 users aren't able to use 0844 numbers. Even contract users aren't able to use 07744 numbers, how crap is that!
But anyway, you can always get a contract mobile (free line rental, free phone, etc) from the mobile phone section of action telecom uk
