Why not compare 3510i and the T300? .. they are both ment to be in the same marketsegment!

That is: cheap phones with colourscreen in short, a youth phone.

When comparing features i think they are about the same with the difference that 3510i has a 4096 colourscreen.

So my bet falls on the Nokia

Heh, there is a surprise =)

Actually, I run my laptop in 256 colors, not all the time, it depends on driver versions etc, but it's fine for writing up papers and emails. The main difference between these is that 3510i has twice the number of shades in red/green, and 4 times the number of blue shades. Over a resolution of 128x128 pixels, blue gradients should look better on 3510i though - all in all that is its only advantage tech-wise. Keep in mind also that java-games will probably only be made to support 256 colors for compatability reasons. In addition, if it is possible for the game-makers to use their own palettes the difference is pretty much negligible. And just to remind you:

Doom runs in 256 colors.
Standard quake runs in 256 colors.
Pretty much all games prior to 1994-95 ran in 256 colors.

When it comes to the screen, other properties are more important than the color depth. Especially since we are talking about resolutions in the order of 128x128 (I know T300 has smaller resolution).

The strong features of T300, which make it superior to 3510i are:

* Mophun
* Joystick

Those two alone should be enough; I don't know if 3510i has triband, email, irda, comparable talktime, or other features that T300 have, but you can probably add these to the list as well.

I dont think many people care how many colours their screen is showing whilst playing games etc.

If you are a T300 or 3510i owner (that is someone around 15 years of age) it is much cooler to say that you have a larger 4096 colour display than just 256. this is very important to younger people.

Well, i dont know wich and how many colours each screen can display at certain times .. but the main thing is anyway that the nokia CAN display up to 4096 colours.. especially in a wallpaper image.

This makes Nokia the winner!

Hm... I thought we were talking about design.
Of course it doesn't make sense to compare Nokia 3510 with SE T300 in any other way (including $$$).

Anyway in my opinion T68m/i still rules.

Hmm.. the difference between a 256 color screen and 4096 color screen is quite noticable, the question is though how much you can actually see it on a small screen. And this can in no way be compared to a PC gfx-card in 256 colors. With a gfx-card set to 256 colors you can still choose any 256 colors from a palette of 16.7 million colors. Which means that you can choose a palette for example with only 256 red colors. While a the T68/T300 has a fixed palette of 256 colors and the 4096 colors on the 3510i screen has a fixed palette of 4096 colors.

Also the 3510i screen actually has a little lower resultion than the T300 screen.

OK, might be true. On the other hand; look at the success of gameboy. It won because of its brand and its gameplay. It was more fun to play and there were tons of familiar games. There were competitors at that time with superior machines.

I think SE are trying something similiar; lots of familiar games and good gameplay. And I don't think the 15-year-olds alone will determine its success.

All I want for christmas is a T300 with super mario bros. And I'm 20 years old.
