The only legitimate reason they insist Flight-mode equiped phones are switched of is they are tarring us all with the same brush of miss-trust!
The reason, for ever 1 person with their phone correctly set in flight mode there will be 2 folk txting their mates! Its a sad fact of life, when was the last time you were in the cinema and some gimp recieved a phone call or actually sent a txt, i see it all the time.
That pretty much sums it up, but on the remote chance phones have been used in terrorist attacks i.e setting of the detonator of a bomb etc, like what happened in Spain last year.
So I am pretty much still cool with them telling us to switch off, for safety reasons and also the remotest chance that the signal does get affected from traffic control to the airline.

It all comes down to the airline, some carriers are fine with mobile phones, others aren't. Regardless of what we may think, it is the airlines call on that one and unfortunately their staff are only following the airlines rules.
If you're in doubt, ring the airlines information line and ask them their policy on flight mode enabled devices.

Its a phone primarily you might turn it into flight mode, but its not like a big red light flashes over your head when its in flight mode! Staff are right to assume its therefor being used in a non-flight mode setting.

I think it depends entirely on the airline your travelling with i have flown with a few different airlines the past 4 years when i had both a P900 and a P910i and on one it was fine as i showed them the screen and the other it was a straight NO! So?

@ Gud... Did you complain? Also who yelled at you, flight staff or another passenger?
It was one of the flight attendants... thus I didn't complain...
